I will chronicle over the next week how you can eat well, healthily, and yummily for less than $20 a week.
Today I had Special K and skim milk (.25 and .20 respectively) for breakfast. I drank four glasses of tap water for lunch. For dinner I had leftover lentil beans which I made with a whole chicken I bought on sale for $3.44. I also made a chicken burrito. Lots of leftovers. About 65 cents for dinner. I made country tyme lemonade also on sale (.10) and had 3 more glasses of tap water before a cup of hot tea for bed(.05).
Monday total
2000 cal
$1.25
On pace for a $8.75 week

Its not hard to eat for less than $20 a week. I think anyone that regularly goes to grocery stores and makes their own food can achieve this. Having it all be 'yummily' is a different story
What was in your burrito?

My tip:
1/2 pack of ramen noodles, one egg, a bunch of frozen vegetables.
Add water. Microwave for 6-7 minutes (until noodles are cooked). Add protien at end or last two min if cooked but refrigerated.

Weak sauce. Just yesterday I saw a lady buy 27 Totinos pizzas, 5lbs of salt pork, the Lil Debbie display, 3 dozen turkey neck, 4 cases each Peach Nehi and Dr.Thunder, the equivalent of a Tyson chicken plant, a pound of salt, a box of Fruity Pebbles, a case of Bar S bologna and 3 industrial sized vats of mayo, all for free. I think you should go back to eating burgers that don't exsist and leave the Super Market sweeping to the professionals.

So tomorrow, drain and rinse the lentils, mix w chopped chicken, and a vinaigrette for a better lunch than water. Next up, lightly mash some lentils, shape into patties w some finely chopped parsley n cumin, then pan fry for a sort of lentil felafel. I could go on and on with the cheapest and easiest to cook of legumes. Chickpeas, too are incredibly versatile and dirt cheap.

$20/week for a single guy is not difficult
I used to do it all the time as a bachelor

quote:I agree. Ill go to Fresh Market today and get 4lb ground beef and 4lb chicken breast for 2.29/2.99 /lb respectively and that will be my meat for the month. I spend a little more than 20 bucks there. The rest of the moth I will go shopping each week for what I need to cook that week and that totals to about $20/week.

How much have you spent? Box of Special K, container of milk, chicken, bag of lentils, tortillas, anything else you added to the burrito...you have to be over $10 already.

i dont think he is including the total cost of the items. just a percentage relative to what he consumed.

Special K is healthy? No.

This. I have a wife and two kids now, so my grocery bills are way too high, but I often think back fondly to my single days and how I could eat very well for not too much money.

Damn I waste too much money on food. I think I'm doing good when I spend $7 on truck tacos for dinner.
