quote:What does this even mean? They are reliable, regardless of what they measure. They are valid at what they purport to measure: college readiness and academic aptitude. They do have some concurrent validity with (not as) IQ tests though.
You might want to look up the reliability and validity of those tests as measures of IQ
quote:Well processing speed is a major area of cognitive processing and is included in most IQ tests. So time is an important factor, albeit is conceptualized a bit different on these tests.
Main problem is the amount of time to answer each question.
quote:Sure, but they are still strong correlates, and confirmatory factor analysis has shown that they load on G. I'm not saying that they are as good as a comprehesive IQ test, but saying they are the "worst" measure of IQ is patently false.
Also it leaves out major areas for testing IQ.

Unfortunately, there's not really a superior way to assess where kids are. But I will say that for the real world, I've found that it's not really reflective at all of people's capabilities.
Most important technical skills in professional jobs are intelligence, efficiency, memory, and a highly organized mind. Right behind that would be social intelligence with an increasing level of importance as your career progresses. Hard to say how much of that can be evaluated through multiple choice problems or anything else for that matter. There's just so much shite you can't really test for that I've found to be important.

The reason I posted about it is because my cousin got a 22 on his ACT.
Isnt that borderline retard level now with the inflated act scores? That score was like a 15 when i went to college in 2000.

Robert Parrish got a 1, worked out OK for him.

The ACT/SAT's can't measure a lot of things that factor into school/real world success, such as work ethic, organization, creativity, people skills, ambition, etc. However, from a pure "book smart" perspective, i.e. the ability to absorb/analyze information quickly and correctly, as well as command of the English language and mathematical skills, standardized tests are extremely accurate in my experience. Pretty much everyone I know scored on a proportional level to how purely book smart they were.

I took my ACT hungover and made a 24, that was good enough. I actually fell asleep for some of the reading section. I think without being hungover I could've scored around 26-28ish. I also was a really terrible student in high school fwiw. I got away with too much bull shite in high school, and that ended up fricking me my first year of college too.

I don't think that's truly fair if it's soley an issue of speed, at least when we it's just a point or two lowest because they had a couple questions left. This post was edited on 3/13 at 1:01 am
The first section was a wake up call for me because I never practiced for it
Teacher goes "5 minutes left" and I look down and I have 13 questions left because I was taking my sweet time
Again it's a mirie I scored a 21. I think I got carried by my English score. I hate English work but I can write an essay pretty good

quote:I got a 32 and have always been a shitty student. Never studied one minute for the ACT. Got kicked out of college 3 times for bad grades. Still got a degree, and am working on a second now, but a high ACT score doesn't correlate to being a good student at all.
I scored a 33 and I did not have a stellar college career.
Like others have said, the smart people got higher scores. Dumb people got lower

My friend had a 27 on his MCAT and after he used the Princeton review, he got a 34. I'd say its legit
It definitely is legit, as far as showing prospective test-takers exactly what's going to be on the test.
Any parents could do the same by printing out previous years' examinations and other material online available for free, the most valuable part of those classes are the practice tests.

It is sad that the person who started this thread was immediately able to quote his subscores

Has this turned into a "brag about your ACT score" thread yet?

Never took the ACT but took the SAT twice and did not do good either time. Took the National Merits Exam and did good on it. Based on that test I was suppose to do about 1200 on the SAT but did not. In the Navy I took the GCT/ARI and scored very high and had the pick of whatever I wanted to do and took Aviation Electronics and made E5 in less than 2 years. I took two College Electronics Courses and did good on both. They wanted me to go to OCS but did not and got out and was a big mistake if I had to do it all over again would have made a different decision. Your stupid when you are young!

I think its hilarious that 90% of the people this thread made over 30 on their ACT...
I was a slacker who couldn't focus and didn't do homework. I got a 22 and called it a day. Still made it to LSU.
