In the south it will always be manners.
From the comments section from Daily Mail:

I bumped into one of these types in London - I was about to walk through a door and noticed someone on the other side coming out of the building so I took the handle and stepped back to open the door so they could leave before I went in, the woman suddenly said "What the heck do you think you are doing" and stormed off. Funny thing is, I would have done the same if it was a man one the other side. It's called manners, sexism has nothing to do with it.
American South and London...who knew.

This is regional. Southern women seem to appreciate it. Yankee women are sometimes contemptuous and sometimes charmed. Women in the Northwest are often offended. That's my experience.

I'll hold a door for anyone, I'll open a door for a man.
If you're a bitch about it, I have no problem shutting in your face.
But damnit you better acknowledge I was nice enough to do it. I don't need a thank you. But I expect she contact, a nod, something to show you're not a huge piece of suit and have some shred of humanity.

Chivalry is sexist according to a new study.
Bunch of damn yankees looking for something to complain about.

What a stupid article. I hold doors almost everyday for "people." I don't see a dude coming and then say oh, and let the door swing shut in his face.
It's just street level decency.

I open doors for everyone, 'cause I'm not a dick. I'll also hold a door open for someone following me if they're close enough behind...if they have a vagina or not. Again...'cause I'm not a dick.

I agree with this.

I open/hold the door for pretty much anybody who happens to be behind me.. Just a habit.
Me too. I think of it as more of the role of manners than the role of gender. On the other end of the spectrum, a petite woman holding the door for a man sometimes seems to offend some men's masculinity.
I don't expect people to open doors for me, but it's nice when they do and I always say thank you.

Yeah study in Boston (north) where women don't encounter chivalry at all so when it does happen it's seen as a sexist thing. Come down to the south. Happens all over the place. Glad I live in the south

Offering my seat to a girl on the Tiger Trails in college always got the panties wet.

Not for the women I care about.

I've never seen so many men turn into p-ssies when an article like this comes out.
Oh no, there's an issue about holding a door! Fiddle dee dee!
If you like to do it, then do it? If not, then don't. You don't need permission to act on your convictions.
I don't feel any obligation to open doors and I don't really see it as manners to do so. you know how you make women equal...pay em equal.
I remember this good old boy I worked with would do the old song and dance about opening the car door for his wife blah blah. And I remember a budget meaning where he raised a stink that two female analysts were paid less than the men and we were correcting that. There's a lot of idiocy in this thread.
