also to wrap this stuff about the suicide note in a bow:
quote:
Did Kurt's suicide note make any sense to you – that he'd found any kind of peace in what he was going to do?
He wrote me a letter other than his suicide note. It's kind of long. I put it in a safe-deposit box. I might show it to Frances–maybe. It's very fricked-up writing. "You know I love you, I love Frances, I'm so sorry. Please don't follow me." It's long because he repeats himself. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'll be there, I'll protect you. I don't know where I'm going. I just can't be here anymore."
There's definitely a narcissism in what he did, too. It was very snotty of him. When we decided we were in love at the Beverly Garland Hotel, we found this dead bird. Took out three feathers. And he said, "This is for you, this is for me, and this is for our baby we're gonna have." And he took one of the feathers away.

Spencer's used to sell a tshirt with the note on it
Posted on 5/5/15 at 4:38 pm to supatigah
Honestly i wouldn't be surprised but i still think it was suicide.

IMO the note was definitely written by Courtney and all signs pointed to Kurt wanting a divorce but to keep custody of his daughter. There are a lot of shady details about his suicide.

I think he killed himself but I think Courtney Love was way more responsible than she would ever admit

I don't think any one band or person killed hair metal. I think it was mostly a combination of Nirvana, AiC, Pearl Jam, NIN, and RATM.
And Jane's Addiction, Butthole Surfers, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, and a host of other good bands that made hair metal seem like the lamest thing ever.

I love GnR, but the truth is that they had one great album and a few really good ones completely unglued. Spaghetti Incident, anyone? Axl's voice was a mess by '92. And if Axl had his way, they just would have become the next Aerosmith, slinging corny power ballads for a living.
This is spot on.

Finally it is pretty telling that the only band voice on the doc is Krist. He was obviously the closest to Cobain and he never publicly sided against Courtney in anything. So Grohl was interviewed and his words were cut. Perhaps the director could have shaved 10 mins of fantasy animation for one segment of Grohl's thoughts. he deserved at least that much. Seeing the old footage and knowing Grohl today, I cant imagine how hard it must have been for him to be happy in the band with Cobain.
Once again, for those that have missed it, Dave wasn't interviewed in time to make the movie. His interview is an extra on the DVD. There is nothing sinister about him not being in the initial release.

Production on this doc began in 2007. I am pretty sure they could have found a way to include Grohl's voice if they wanted to.
Posted on 5/5/15 at 9:57 pm to supatigah
Agreed.
As far as Grohl, the project started in 2007 but most of the filming was much more recent.

ugh. that article made me cringe. I thought the Montage of Heck documentary was interesting. Seemed to me like they were on drugs in most of the videos. Not sure why Frances or Courtney would want MOST of the videos to be drug fueled looking. I was a defiant young teenager when Nirvana got big and I was really sad he died. Back then, I didn't realize how Courtney really was but now I think she pushed him to commit suicide. Frances and Courtney had a falling out a couple of years ago and I think she went to live with her grandma. Seems like now that she's out of her teenage years that they have made up and are getting along. Frances looks just like Kurt to me.
Whoever posted that story from the detective...that's a really good interesting read!

The first hour of that doc was so on point, then it becomes an out of control drug fueled train wreck which actually coincides with the band's epic explosion to fame. I really liked it.
I was a freshman in college when nevermind came out so I feel like I was on the front lines of that musical revolution away from the hair band rock. I really liked that doc. I didn't grasp at the time how fricked up cobain was until that incident in Italy when it was reported he almost died.

G'n'R was the first blow against hair metal in the mainstream (though there was a huge and active underground in the 80s that occasionally bubbled up to the surface like the Surfers or the Mats), and it's really kind of sad for Axl. He was a big supporter of Nirvana and viewed their bands as "allies" in the war against the LA hair metal scene, but Nirvana lumped them in with the "enemy" so they got swept aside as well in the coming tide.
I need to see this movie, but what I find fascinating is how many people COULD have been Cobain. There was just so many voices at the time, and it's really just luck that the Voice of the Underground got pinned to Cobain. I wonder how differently pop music history is if the zeitgeist centers around Mark Lanegan, Mark Arm, Evan Dando, Eric Bachmann, or Stephen Malkmus (or 20 other guys you could mention... or Kathleen Hanna to name one of the many girls it could have been).
Cobain probably had that perfect ambivalence towards fame. He really wanted his band to be huge, but he really hated the concept of rock stars.

At least reference mudhoney if you want to say some shitty band's shitty song somehow diminishes what Nirvana meant to music.
If you insist. To be fair, Arm and Cobain were friends, and Cobain always gave Mudhoney credit for pretty much inventing the "Seattle sound". Without Mudhoney, Sub Pop never gets off the ground and never puts out Bleach. They knew the debt they owed. That said, here's the difference between a band that says they don't want to be popular and a band that did everything in their power to not be popular. Mudhoney did not give a single frick and took biting the hand that feeds you to an art form not seen since the Replacements. anyway, here was there post-Cobain suicide song. And remember, they were friends (though the "you" is probably Courtney Love).
You're so tormented
Demented
Indebted
To all the assholes just like you
Who've come and gone before you
Predictable
Just plain dull
Why don't you
Blow your brains out, too?
You're so into yer shtik
You're so hounded
Ungrounded
Surrounded
By scum sucking leeches
Who will shovel your shite
Sweep your dessert
Both before and after it
Feed your ego
They never tell you no
All of you
Make me sick
You're so into yer shtik
And they're all into your shtik
Well, Mitchell's got a new girl
She's nineteen
Hollywood model
Star of the screen
She's up here
To support the scene
It's all part
Of his rock and roll fantasy
Stan was at the bar
With bandaged hands
They tried to dry him out
And he got mad
Cut his fist
Punching hospital glass
Made his myth
Now he's trapped
Susie's just a girl
Who's doing her job
That came to New York
And wanted a car
Working with the management
To the stars
Kissing arse
Is a part of her job
It's part of her job
Yeah, it's part of her job
Oh she loves her job
What the hell?
She does it so well
I'm not perfect
I've lived a life of mistakes
I'm not perfect
There's one thing I can't take
You are into yer shtik
You're so into yer shtik
And they're so into yer shtik
frick you, you make me sick

I'm not trying to be nit-picky, but he grew op in a small, isolated town. I only point that out because Aberdeen is a dark, grimy, shite hole of a town, and I've always felt that it comes through in his music.
It sure is. My wife and her family are from Grays Harbor County, specifically Montesano (which is a great little town btw). My wife and I live in Olympia.
I watched MoH last night on demand.
One of the things that really stood out was the animation, of Cobain in Aberdeen and Oly. How dark, gritty, moody these places really are. How the animators nailed the look of both cities, the houses, the atmosphere. Aberdeen is a gigantic shithole (which some are trying to clean up but it's still meth/heroin infested). I used to work about 100 yards away from Cobain's place in Olympia although the house in the animation sequence is different, it most definitely captures the feel.
Disappointed with no Grohl material, heck, even Buzz would of been good to have considering the enormous influence he and The Melvins had on Cobain and Krist in both Aberdeen, Montesano and Oly. Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary other than the abrupt ending and I understand that there is really nothing left to rehash regarding his actual death (his suicide note, Marty Reimer reporting his death, etc. etc.)

I thought the animation was fantastic. I live in Tacoma, so I'm no stranger to dark and gritty, and I agree, they captured it well.

Isn't it a fourplex? I've been by a house in Oly that my friend claimed was it.

Duplex, It's 114 Pear Street NE. Right by my old Armory. You can pull it up on streetview
ETA: My bad, it's a triplex and a different color back then. So, actually the house may be the same in the animation still (I can't find an image of it).
