Creating simple riffs that blow up and become the sounds of a generation put you on those very list. You dont have to play fancy to be a great guitarist. You have to create raw emotion and energy and his guitar did that.

He was influential with his angst and emotion with his lyrics and phrasing more so than his guitar IMO. I'm sorry, I just can't include Kurt with people like Hendrix, Duane Allman, BB King, Buddy guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy page, David Gilmour, Albert King, Clapton... And MANY others. That'd be a joke to me.

I think of that as well as the opening riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
He may not be as talented as those guys on the guitar, but he's easily as influential.

I for one think he is a better guitarist than most of those you mentioned. Being a good guitar player isn't about being able to play epic solos.
Give me a guitar player who plays 4 chords that makes me feel something any day over one who plays 40 chords in a song that sucks or is boring.

There aren't a lot of guitarists that when they play can make you feel what they are feeling. Kurt Cobain is one of the few.
Jimi Hendrix was definitely one, two completely different styles but as far as displaying emotion through a guitar they were the two best imo.

Well this is where we kinda draw that line. Now we are talking about it from a subjective point, taste. Those guys I mentioned move me and influence me as a guitarist. Kurt doesn't move me as a guitar player, but I can respect someone else being moved by that. Objectively he's nowhere as skilled though, Kurt said himself "I can hardly play the thing". And honestly technicality is no where near key for me, I want someone that moves me and has soul; it's why blues guitarists are my personal favorites, it just hits me in the feels the most. Again I respect Kurt, especially as a frontman and how much he influenced rock music with his angst all coming out, it's some very real stuff. But to me personally his guitar playing specifically doesn't speak to me. But it moves you guys that are big fans, and that's a cool thing.

Yeah exactly. It's all subjective. I am a guitarist/songwriter as well and have been a lot more influenced and motivated by Cobain's playing than by any blues guitarist. There really is no wrong answer, different strokes for different folks.

Gilmour makes me picture settings better than any, he takes you to different atmospheres. It really just makes me feel as though I'm high as frick. He never over does it either, it's always extremely tasteful. He'll let the notes scream, he'll phrase it well. My favorite guitarist all do phrasing really well, they make the guitar sing. A million notes being blasted off is impressive but that lacks soul, phrasing takes so much feel to it. Hanging on notes, doing bends, pausing, it's the little things.

See I think we would disagree here too, I like Gilmour a lot and I think he is a great guitarist, probably the best atmospheric guitarist ever, as you mentioned.
I like Syd Barett better as a guitarist though, he was just so ahead of his time.

The haircut scene is sad and honestly pathetic. I thought it was a good doc but wondered why no Grohl perspective. Google shows the director didn't interview him until right before the release. WTF? Is the director a junkie too? For it to be over 2 hours the ending was weak, but I understand considering the project was for his daughter.
