I worked for local, state and federal government for twenty years and one thing was consistent. If you aren't willing to shut your mouth and do as told regardless of how right you are then it isn't the place for you. There will be less qualified people telling you to do something that isn't in the best interests of anyone and if you don't do it, it will cost you. This is a fact. There are definitely hard-working people trying to do the right thing but they will be in the minority. The vast majority of government workers seek out their positions because they don't want to work hard, they want to be guaranteed a position and retirement for not trying hard and/or they are seeking to enrich themselves or their friends.

I am retired from that work now and it isn't sour grapes. It is the truth. I was the guy who would tell bosses "NO" because I wasn't willing to do something less than my best. It cost me in my career but I am glad I stood my ground. You can go in saying "I won't be like that" but they will beat you down or you will quit in frustration.

The ignorance in this thread is hilarious.

Meh, it could be used as a stepping stone.

I work for the federal government for the first couple of months of every year and then I work for the state government for the next few weeks after that.

Pension plans must be eliminated from government jobs.
Most private companies have long since had to abandon pensions for employees due to excessive costs.
No reason government working do nothings should be entitled to a pension.

Awww, poor private companies. Enjoy social security, long as it's still there when you retire.

Exactly. In my parish, each councilman represents about 10,000 people. His kids go to the same high school I went to. They go to the same church. He still works a regular 9-5 job like every one else. I know that I can go sit on his back porch and drink coffee with him on a saturday morning.

I can't do that with my Senator.

I may be able to do that with my state rep since he's a cool guy.

I can't do that with my Congressman, nor my governor (though maybe his wife ).

I can have lunch with my parish president.

People at the local level are closer to the problems and closer to the people they represent. That's why federalism exists, so that more power is concentrated where people are closer to the problems. The problem is, that since 1865 (even more-so since the Wilson Administration), the power and decision-making has continually shifted more and more to the federal government to be made by unaccountable bureaucrats and people so far removed from the problems they are tasked with fixing that they can't possibly make informed decisions.

ECB, you are generalizing. As a few people have said prior to this, there are hard working people that work for the government (including myself), and you have your lazy-asses, that want to do just enough to get by (if that), and get their check in two weeks.

I bust my arse every day to earn my pension. Luckily, I got in before the legislature/LASERS tried to cut benefits/make employees pay more into the system.

I do agree that for the betterment of the state, new employees may need to come in with a 401(k) type plan, because if not, the government will eventually go broke.

Funny - I worked for the SEC and now I'm a partner in a large professional services firm.

Wonder where I'd have gotten to if my ambition hadn't died at the SEC?

It was definitely a dumb generalization.

There are some people who work for the government and are content, there are others who work in the government because a good opportunity came up and are using it as a stepping stool, just like any other private organization.

Yes. I'll follow that up with a couple of questions for you. Do you feel like making a 3rd of what people in your field working in the private sector make? Also, would you enjoy watching dumb@sses get promotions over you just because they are veterans and you're not? If the answer is yes to both of those, then go for it!

Well I certainly appreciate the responses. One of the biggest reasons I even considered it is because my fiance would like to be close to home.

I've been with the Gov for a while now, almost 17 years. The retirement is the main factor for me. However they changed a lot of things so I wouldn't do the gov job anymore.
U might could start out with the gov to build up training and private company relationships. They will hire u later on
