“Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel,” the film’s director Roland Emmerich wrote on Twitter.
This news comes right after Jessie Usher was announced as the lead for the movie, which hits theaters on June 24, 2016.

Glad to see Goldblum signed on, but still feels incomplete without Will Smith. Kinda like when they did all those Jim Carrey sequels without Jim Carrey in them.

It will be fine without Will Smith. Just give Liam blackface and say residual alien radiation gave him the "Bosley Hair Club for Men" effect and be done with it.

I don't think Will Smith's absence will be a killer for this movie. However, it was idiotic on Smith's part to decline a piece of this pie.

It won't kill it and he was foolish to pass. Not that I particularly care to see an ID2 but it'll make a billion and this'll be another turned down Neo role for him.

It's all a part of Will Smith's new approach to acting. The key thing is to not be involved in any movies that are successful.

Yea Will Smith really comes across as a guy who needs more money.

When I watched this movie as an adult, I couldn't get past the Grand Canyon of the alien technology being able to be infected by a human made computer virus.

They used an Apple Powerbook 5300, so of course it worked. Apple can do anything.

Who is Jessie Usher?
He's playing the grown-up version of Will Smith's son from the first movie.

That has to be the most implausible story line ever put into a movie. Just mind-numbingly idiotic.

Except that he's still in MASSIVELY successful movies.
He just doesn't make much anymore.
I want to be pumped about ID4-2 but I will remain hesitant. I'm confident that they'll be able to make a film that I will enjoy though, so there's that. Hopefully the plot will involve having to deal with the larger alien force coming to investigate/avenge the fallen ships. That could be cool if done correctly. And I really, really hope it will show how the world progressed after all the ships were taken down. That's one thing from the original that always stood out to me...at the end, all of these 15-mile-wide ships are now falling onto the most populated cities around the world, and that kind of damage would take decades (at best) to clean up and move past. Always thought it'd be cool to see how the world dealt with not only that angle, but also the angle of new technology created from having access to all of these alien ships. Maybe that could be how we defeat the larger force (if that's the direction the movie goes in).

Amazing that it was compatible with alien tech, considering back then Apple wasn't compatible with any other technology known to man.

Didn't someone say randy quaids character survived and is in the sequel?

I hope not...that would be extraordinarily stupid, and sort of take away from his "sacrifice" in the original.
Not to mention that Quaid is a straight up loon these days, and there's almost no chance they'd work with him on this one.

I'm just hoping it comes to light that Randy Quaid did not in fact die, but was transported through a trans-dimensional portal where he became the overlord of the Aliens and will be leading the strike against all the in-bred hicks who didn't believe him when he said he was abducted (even though you know, there were aliens appearing all around the globe)

I read an article that implied that the reason the technology was compatible was because our current knowledge of comp tech came from the ship that crashed in 50's.. It made more sense under that premise but I don't know if they actually stated this in movie.
