I am looking for a decent used car (Mazda 3 or corrolla) for my daughter and I ran across hertz used car sales. They have great prices and they say the cars are well maintained. Wondering if anyone has previous experience buying a rental.

At first glance it seems like a bad idea to buy a rental, but in reality the rental car companies take much better care of their cars than the average driver who eventually trades in their car. I bought a rental 5 years ago haven't had a problem since, and I drive quite a bit.

They probably are well maintained, (and with logs to prove it), but it would have to be a really, really great price for me to consider it. But if its a first car for a brand new driver, its probably not going to last more than a few years anyway .

Not certified so IWNBI.

Otherwise I don't see a problem with it.

Very bad mistake.

Rental car miles are like dog years.

Multiply the actual miles by 7.

I applaud the Mazda3 choice, they are built in Japan.

I agree with others here that buying a rental car can be a shaky proposition.

Might I suggest a Certified Pre-Owned unit from Mazda?

You need to do your research* on these cars, some can be rental returns, some are service loaner vehicles, some are lease returns and some are just plain trade-ins.

I would personally go up one class of car for a kid to a mid-size Accord or Camry. I wouldn't recommend a Mazda6 as the Toyota and Honda offerings are much better.

*The Car Fax will state what kind of title was issued for the vehicle, lease, rental, commercial or private owner and whether there was any repair claim against the VIN.

Honestly depends on the make/model of the car and its primary airport/office location.

Most go to auction or sold directly to dealer so lots of people own rentals and don't even know it.

Late to your thread, but this is what my dad did for me back in the mid 80's. He bought a Hertz car for 5k and that was my Christmas present in high school. I can't tell you how happy I was (didn't need the status symbol car), and that car got me through college. Thanks Dad.

Your mileage may vary, but it is a very good option.

Depends on where they're pricing them at. Not only are they driven a lot but the rental company's like most corporations are making cuts every where they can. Very minimal care except making the inside look and smell nice.
