I'll miss Jim as he is a true Tiger! It's great having someone who can draw from 30 years of experience.

Listening to him on the radio was always interesting. It's a deep drive...going back...going back...way back..................caught by the shortstop.

I'm 34 years old. Have never heard anyone else do it. When I hear that voice, I immediately think LSU. He will be missed.

Agreed, Jim Hawthorne haw been amazing for me to listen to growing up bleeding purple and gold. When I think LSU athletics - he's a big part of it. He will be missed.

LSU was fortunate to have two iconic PBP voices in Ferguson & Hawthorne......Best of luck in retirement Jim.....The vast majority of LSU fans will miss your voice & passion.

I'm assuming he must not do a real great job with baseball from all the posts. (Personally, I only follow football- read: any football, H.S., college, NFL, Canadian, Arena, etc.) Sorry to see him go, but I must admit with all the network TV, I haven't listened much lately. But when you do hear his voice, it means LSU is on. I hope whoever his replacement is, will do a good job for us football fans and for the baseball folks! Geaux Tigers

I have been pretty critical of Jim on this board, but I do want to sincerely thank him for his service to LSU. He's a Tiger through and through, and hopefully he can still serve in some capacity after his last broadcast.

He hits it hard into left, it's going back, back, back, and they make the catch in shallow center.

i can see already i'll get nostalgic when i hear them play soundbytes of his broadcasts in the future. i've been hearing that guy call LSU games since i was a kid. i remember him on the AM stations when we were driving back from the hunting camp on Saturday nights. i feel old now.

John Ferguson will always be " da man " for me, but Hawthorne is a Tiger through and through. I'll miss him....

I thought no one could replace John Ferguson--and I still believe he was the best LSU has had, but--whether errant or not in some calls--Jim has been the "lighthouse" guiding a lot of us to LSU broadcasts over the years. Here in Central Florida, I can (faintly at times) pull in WWL and monitor what's going on. If I hear Hawthorne's voice, then I know it's LSU sports. The one problem here, though, is it seems like the radio reception dies just about the time Jim has something crucial to say or when he gives the score. It's easy to distinguish between Jim an the Hispanic station "sharing" 870 on the AM dial.

There evidently will be a nation-wide search for Hawthorne's replacement.
One can only hope he has a fraction of
Jim's enthusiasm, professionalism, and love for LSU.

I find it amazing that some people define Hawthorne's career by his 'flubs.' What they don't understand is that the man called literally THOUSANDS of football, basketball, and baseball games for over three and a half decades. Out of the tens of thousands of calls he had made, I think he is entitled to a few major flubs (Jack Hunt, etc) and probably 50 or 60 very minor ones. That's what made him human and listenable.
His great voice, consistency, spontaneity, emotion, loyalty, and sincere caring for everything LSU will be almost impossible to replace.
His predecessor, John Ferguson, had one of the best voices in the business, but his range and true emotion did not match Hawthorne's.

Best of luck Jim in all your future endeavors.

BTW, thanks for always pronouncing it "L-S-Shoe"
and not "L Essssss You" like Franques......

For someone who hasn't lived in Louisiana since the early 90s. Hawthorne's voice was what I searched for when games weren't televised.

Picking up WWL at night or scanning Sirus channels for the broadcast, it was always Hawthorne's voice that first alerted me that I had found the game.

I remember stopping on hill tops where AM reception was clear and listening to critical pieces of the game before I'd continue my Saturday night drive.

I hope they find a quality voice and knowledgeable broadcaster to take his place. Honestly, I'd like the person to have a Cajun accent so that I'd know I had found the game without looking at the display.

I don't give a shite about his "flubs", in fact I find it endearing that he's passionate and maybe gets lost in his words from time to time.

My gripe is that he makes listening to a baseball game impossible and he's absolutely insufferably negative. He's supposed to be objective and paint a picture of the game and be able to talk a little bit about the goings-on of a baseball game in the interim, none of which he does well at all.

I appreciate his dedication to LSU but it's been time for him to go.

Exactly. His voice signifies LSU, and broadcasts of games will not be the same.
