35 years, it's like having a relative die.

JH gets a bad rep on this site, but he is a great voice, passionate and good man. Always friendly speaking with when I passed by him in visiting venues.

The disdain seen in his "retirement" thread is disappointing. JH was great (as was his predecessor John Ferguson).
I have listened to him since he started for hundreds of broadcasts. He wasn't perfect but I have zero complaints. He is what our PBP should be like.
JH - God bless, best wishes, and Geaux Tigers!

Jim Hawthorne. GOAT.
The Voice of the Tigers will be missed.

While I was introduced to the Tigers via the voice of John Ferguson, all of my memories of LSU broadcast involve Jim Hawthorne. I always liked Jim and the enthusiasm he showed for the Tigers.
Bashing Jim late in his career just seems to be something folks are doing for sport or to be fashionable. Let it go.

As much as Jim is an all time great great for a broadcaster, he did stay in the booth too long. He is a legend for LSU but he just stayed a few too many years and the diminished skills were evident. You can't deny that. All said it's gonna be a weird sad day when he is not in the booth anymore

Wow, I came for the excitement over JH retiring and I wasn't disappointed.

At least they are conducting a nationwide search for a replacement and not promoting Hanigriff. He is about as boring as they come.
None of the local guys are capable of it .. But, then again, by the 2020s, people will be barely listening to games on the radio, so it may not matter. Hawthorne held on long enough to let a number of old, good capable voices either leave the market or the business .. The current guys that are on the air doing games are doing it because they never were nor ever will be a threat to Hawthorne, in his eyes .. He was the one that basically hired/hand picked all of them ..

Prayers to the entire Hawthorne family.

I can't help but feel sad.
It's like just finding out your uncle has one year left to live.
I grew up on Jim. He's been the voice of the Tigers my whole life. I can't really imagine the booth on Saturdays without him.

I didn't hate him or anything, but he had a weird nasally voice and blew the biggest call of his career. It is what it is. Good luck to him.

Agreed, Jim Hawthorne haw been amazing for me to listen to growing up bleeding purple and gold. When I think LSU athletics - he's a big part of it. He will be missed.

A huge part of LSU sports for many people. Some can't remember LSU football before Hawthorne started calling. He will be missed.

Yeah I guess it's time , but the man loves LSU as much as I, and anyone that hates on him is probably not a long time fan like some of us.
BTW, I thought heard him say he was originally from a small town in Texas and moved to Anacoco after, anyone else hear this?

No doubt had his flaws, but he has been the voice of the tigers for my entire life so to that I say God bless Mr. Hawthorne and thank you

I have always liked Jim Hawthorn. He was better than the majority of sec guys. I will miss him.
