I love Jim Hawthorne.
I've met him more than once on road football games ,,...always a first class individual.
I'm 38 years old and my best memories of LSU baseball and football games all with this man calling the games.

No doubt he will be missed.... He's a LSU Tiger legend.

Why not say something nice about Jim. Instead you want to preemptively negate any criticism. Also, you think that the replacement is going to be inferior to Jim.

Plenty of people will be here to hate on the man but his voice is/was legendary and we'll see that right away with whoever replaces him.

Say something nice. Even if people criticize some of Jim's calls.

Metry Tyger, you hit the nail on the head. Pick any big time sports broadcaster from your Mount Rushmore of broadcasters, sit him down in front of a microphone for 30+ yrs, covering all 3 major sports, almost literally not missing a game in all those yrs ( check out his consecutive game streak in all 3 sports)and see how many mistakes your guy will have made. Obviously, his age caught up with him, but for what he did for as long as he did, it's obvious it was never a job for him; rather, his love for LSU is & always be off the charts. For that, I can easily cut him some slack. As for his replacement, an interesting aspect of his retirement is that he's over the entire LSU media dept. So any replacement will have to be able to perform those duties as well unless JA decides to separate that from any broadcasting duties. Brando? no. He was fired/let go from CBS for good reason.

I also enjoyed that all I had to ever do was not listen to him.

He made listening to LSU sporting events a miserable experience for the most part. He was the essence of "catastrophe syndrome." I've never heard a sports broadcaster harp on the negative as much as Jim; LSU's pathetic offenses over the last few years made this worse.

find it amazing that some people define Hawthorne's career by his 'flubs.'

I don't find it "amazing" at all. Some of us are drama queens and being hypercritical is all some of us have to pass the day.

Broadcasting is a very tough gig and doing it successfully for 3 major college sports for almost 40 yrs is amazing.

Enjoy your retirement, Jim. You have earned it!!!

I didn't hate him or anything, but he had a weird nasally voice and blew the biggest call of his career.

This. Even his supporters can't say he's a good play-by-play guy. They just have fond memories. If it had been someone other than Hawthorne, they'd have fond memories of him.

Personally, his voice conjures memories of a perpetually underachieving football program in the '80s and '90s for me.

Maybe we can clone Jim Henderson.

As much as people like to complain about him, its going to take a while to get over not hearing him for LSU sports. I'm going to miss him.

He has said that it is his most memorable call in the past 35 years of his career.

I grew up listening to John Ferguson & Walter Hill on Saturday nights. Even after I relocated to CO I could still listen to them on a 50k watt station out of Shreveport (I think).
I've heard a little of Hawthorne. Not in the same league as Ferguson IMO.

So did I - used to turn the little AM radio ever which way to get a signal. Fond memories with my dad on Sat nights.

John Ferguson was great (what a voice) but he had his quirks as well. IMO, JH was almost as good. They were both ol' school - trying to get listeners to not only hear but "see" the action and "feel" the emotions. Both were great.

Was driving home when I heard this on the radio:

2008 baseball..........Blake Dean's winning hit (21 seconds)

It's definitely Germans. I have posted this previously.

Best wishes to you, Jim.

Some of you guys may not like Jim, but you can never question his loyalty to LSU and bleeding purple and gold for many years.

He has represented LSU well.

I recall hearing Hawthorne doing Centennary basketball when Robert Parrish played there before he became the voice of the Tigers.

So he has been a broadcaster for many years. I do think the quality of his work in recent years has not been nearly as good as those early years.

Best memory of Jim Hawthorne calling a game was back in 1989 when no college baseball games were on television. Listening to the back to back of the doubleheader with Texas A&M at their regional when they were the #1 team in the country still gives me chills to this day. I stayed up late into the night to hear the ending with Garrity's pinch hit double off the wall and McDonald coming in from the outfield to close it out to get to Omaha. I felt like I was there. Legendary!

A&M was something ridiculous like 55-5 going into that Regional at College Station....

I have some great memories associated with Jim's calls; number 1 will always be the Warren Morris walk off, but there are lots of other games he broadcast that are part of Tiger history, and the funny screw up on occasion I found funny rather than irksome. Thanks JH, and Enjoy your retirement.
