If you love to cook and you're like me, you get a warm feeling when you walk into a really good supermarket. So here are the rules: there are none. You can have a favorite because of economics, or food quality, or maybe one just brings back a childhood memory. So let's have at it...here's mine:
5. Pierre Part Store
4. Winn Dixie Houma (closed)
3. Publix Orange Beach
2. Grand Isle Sureway
1. Any HEB

Well, you SAID no rules, so here's my list....I always visit grocery/food stores when I travel.
1. Mercato Centrale in Florence, Italy: technically, no, it's not a supermarket. It is an indoor market with various stalls (butcher, produce, seafood, etc). Everything is beautifully displayed, but the best part is the stall Nerbone, which serves food to mostly market workers & locals. Ribollita, beef sandwiches that are dipped in the cooking liquid right before serving, etc. Like dis:
2. Ferry Building Farmer's Market. Yes, another one that's technically not a supermarket, but the farmer's market to end all markets. A ludicrously beautiful display of California bounty, right on SF Bay.
3. Tie between my two favorites in Rome: Volpetti and Castroni.

I thought about Phoenicia but I didn't consider it a supermarket. I do love that place, though. I eat lunch there multiple times a week.

I'm talking about the original out on Westheimer. That one downtown isn't nearly as good as far as grocery shopping goes.

The new HEB at San Felipe and Fountainview is going to blow everything away. They've pretty much taken the best of all thier stores and put all of that in there.

Nerbone is awesome.
1. Berkeley Bowl - the best produce and all around grocery store I have ever been to. Even manages to overcome being in Berkeley, CA.
2. Woodland Mkt - Kentfield CA - small local store with fantastic produce, great meat, and a incredible wine selection.
3. Central Mkt - pretty comprehensive
4. Mollie Stones - a regional chain. In NorCal, good produce, great meat, great wine selection.
5. Whole Foods - I generally find Whole Foods to be consistent with high quality content including prepared foods. That said, the one in my town doesn't sell wine, and the bakery sucks.

In BR area:
1) Rouses @ Juban
2) Whole Foods
3) Fresh Market
4) Calandos
5) Mathernes
1000) Carters
I would also put Maxwells and Chris's Specialty meats in there for specialty places.
