Bonus season is in March, and it would be unamerican of me to put my whole
Bonus in a savings account. So id like to get myself a nice pig gun. Now i know absolutely nothing about AR's, but would like to learn. Does anyone have any recommendations on different makes and models, whats a good caliber for shooting pigs (.223 just seems too small to me, but i could be wrong). Whatchya got OB?
Edit: try to keep it under $1500 if possible

My next gun will probably be an M&P 10

Buy a 5.56 AR at $600 and play around with it. If you like it, you can add a .300 blackout upper (15 second change) or buy a .308 (completely different gun) ARs are like LEGOS for adults...

CMMG MK3 are around $1500, can find some used if you look for cheaper.
DPMS G2 308 rifles have been getting awesome reviews and have some compatible parts with AR15s. Im seriously debating getting a DPMS G2 Recon. You can find them new around $1200.

is 5.56 mm ammo tough to find?

No it is the round the military uses. 5.56 is the same shape, or almost so, as the .223. The 5.56 shoots at a higher pressure and any 5.56 gun shoots .223 also.

I have killed more than 200 hogs with my DPMS Panther 308. You can't go wrong with DPMS. I got mine tricked out with all the night vision stuff from Jagerpro.

I have a sig715 that shoots .308 that I bet would slay some pigs. They also make a Sig mcx that is changeable from s 223 to a 300blk to a 7.62x39. They are a little over your budget tho.

Here are some factors to consider:
1. Cost
2. Purpose
And my explanation:
1. I always suggest hunting hogs with a 5.56. Why is that exactly? Because I don't think they are worth more money than that. They reproduce like cockroaches and are numerous. If you were to sit in a hunting stand and go for a one-shot kill, I would suggest something larger than 5.56. But if you plan on mowing down groups of them, I would suggest a 5.56. You can put more rounds down range and get back on target quicker. If it takes 5 rounds of 5.56 to put down a hog, it's still cheaper than 2 rounds of 6.8 SPC.
If you want a dual-purpose gun (like hogs AND deer) I would suggest getting an AR10 instead. "AR10" is the term used to describe any AR chambered in .308, in the most basic sense. Some of the guns listed up there ^ are great AR10s. My personal favorites are the S&W M&P10 and the Ruger SR762. Great rifles.
2. This also harps back to #1 since price of ammo will factor. If you're going for a gun you don't mind shooting the hell out of, I would go with a 5.56. Cost per round will be much cheaper than an AR10. If you want a hog/deer gun, I would suggest an AR10 though.
I am not a huge fan of 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel for hog hunting. The reason is mainly cost. These are significantly more expensive than the larger 308 round. If you plan on hunting from a stand and just shooting one, these wouldn't be a problem. But again, if you're going for eradication, I would say stick with a 5.56. Or 308 if you have deep pockets.
