Can we talk about the coach's Xs and Os skill level?

Not trying to get banned. Apparently praise for a coach is allowed, but criticism is not.

Can we discuss this on the board?

There was a play that SC ran very successfully once. The inbound play where the guy faked going to the too if the key then went back door for an easy layup. They ran the same play a few minutes later when they needed a basket. It looked like the players were not in a formation to stop this.

Shouldn't you know that was coming?

The guy faked a cut on an inbound. Maybe the next time he actually does cut. Damned if you do damned if you don't. Comes down to making the basket...

S. Carolina ran that same inbound play on Kentucky last week and scored super easy.

Execution could be the problem and not X and O's.

That didn't have anything to do with coaching. Gray got beat twice. He was betting on the out pass and probably wanted to intercept and head down court.

The poster that actually knows Xs and Os is a rare thing on this board.

Honestly , your post doesn't seem too educated on Xs and Os either.

You basically explained the play in very basic terms noticeable to anyone watching.
Not knocking you , but not sure you showed any ability to critique Xs and Os.

Granted its only one post, so I may have you wrong.

Looked to me like he knew it was coming the second time and still got beat.

This is complete bull. People here forget that making exaggerative statements not backed any knowledge or reality is not criticism.

Saying that Coach Jones is bad at X&Os because they got beat on two well executed plays is not criticism. It's a stupid post.

Nah man don't feel bad, I don't know if it's that our players struggle to grasp concepts, our coaches are bad at coaching it, or our coaches just don't know X's and O's.

Anybody who knows basketball knows we struggle badly in the X's and O's department. The first inbounds play was just a great play, kudos to them, the second time I saw it coming watching on TV, so did my buddies, and so did the announcer who commented on it, but apparently our team/coaches did not. That really isn't a good thing at all.
Another example of poor X's and O's is our press break at the end, if you even want to call it that. Our guards came together like they should, but they didn't break out hard to the ball, set a screen, or do anything except for jog around and make half attempts to get open. And it hurt us, we got trapped and used a TO, and then we got a 5 second count because we couldn't get it in.

Formation?

It's basketball. We were playing man and Gray got beat on a back cut twice. There's no X's and O's that go in to it.

If there are three people on the Rant that actually know basketball X's and O's, I'd be floored.

Do we have to complain about this when the team wins?

If the Tigers, who appeared to me to be sleepwalking through much of this game--albeit without Patterson playing--can still manage to win a conference game, then it's okay!

The coaches can hopefully work on this in practice or go over it in a film session.

Some folks are loyal and protective and they think any criticism after a win is counterproductive and being a bad fan. I understand the sentiment. Don't agree but understand.

I'll give Grey the one but never should have happened again so soon after the first. Protect the goal, hell give him the ball on the perimeter and stay between him and the goal.

Was it mentioned in the huddle after the first time it happened? I couldn't tell you. I hope it was.

What about our half court play in the second half when we needed a basket and we went high to Mickey, low to Martin and Hornsby cut across the lane under a back screen to the corner and he got a wide open shot after he faked under the chasing defender. Pretty damn good play there. Shouldn't they know that it is coming since we've run that hi/lo set during every game this season? They are good plays because they are hard to stop and if you do it right, you only run it "against formations" that struggle to stop the concept.

ETA: Also the guy's name is Gray. He's on the team and it is a well-known color. Spell it correctly. If you don't know, look it up.

Good solid man to man D is needed regardless of play run. You can't count on guessing what the play will be. You can shade to a specific player but that's about it. Man the frick up and guard your guy and switch when necessary.

I think the LSU coaching staff needs a lot of credit from where they were at the beginning of the year compared to now. Execution was the problem and playing as a team not X and O. They have great game plans now that they know there team better. I always see them attack the opposition weakness and playing to our strengths. But what ever...

You should probably not use the phrasing X's and O's for any sport you post about on here because 90% of the people here will argue what exactly is contained in it and the other 10% will think they know what it means.
