Last year, LSU ended up ranked #9 in TOP, and A&M?

A&M type of offense keeps the defense not eh field too long
A lot is made of this point, and I agree that it's got a major impact on the defensive performance. However, another thing to consider is what they see in practice everyday. These schemes that the aTms and Auburns of the world run are very specific to each team/system. So if that's what the D is used to seeing in practice everyday, they'll have trouble up against more conventional offenses, or even ones that run different schemes. I realize that they use scout teams to prepare the defense, but I wonder about the effectiveness in simulating live action.

Between Chavis and Muschamp, this year will tell us a lot regarding how well spread/HUNH offenses can mesh with good defenses. Personally, I'm very skeptical. Ellis Johnson had some good Ds before he got to Auburn. The only example that I can think of combining an unconventional offense and a stout defense is Florida when Meyer was there. However, he always seems to have good defenses, whether he was at Utah, Florida, or Ohio St, and neither Sumlin nor Malzahn are in the same stratosphere as him.

I don't see him doing good over there. He doesn't have the players he needs over there and I'm not sure if he'll ever get them. Add that with his offense being low TOP and it doesn't look good.

Isn't Chief looking to retire soon? He might retire as soon as he has them playing decent ball, which will take a few years. He won't have the success over there that he had at LSU.

How many hurry up offenses have/had a good defense? I honestly don't know the answer. I can't think of any. I know Oregons D was high up in the turnover category last year, but they obviously couldn't hold up against a more physical team.

My opinion: Chavis' tenure at AM will be a big fail for the most part.

Stop. Don't be inferior. This is LSU and they are soft.

Defenses against Power 5 Opponents
Yards Per Play (Rank) Points Per Play (Rank) Third down % (Rank)

2009
LSU - 4.6 (17) .22 (8) 36.7% (36)
aTm - 5.7 (84) .45 (98) 37.5 (41)

2010
LSU - 4.9 (26) .29 (19) 33.3 (8)
aTm - 4.7 (16) .29 (19) 37.2 (33)

2011
LSU - 4.0 (2) .16 (2) 36.8 (36)
aTm - 4.6 (14) .34 (48) 40.4 (62)

2012
LSU - 4.3 (7) .24 (10) 31.5 (9)
aTm - 5.2 (41) .28 (21) 32.7 (13)

2013
LSU - 5.1 (34) .32 (34) 39.5 (63)
aTm - 6.2 (103) .41 (85) 41.3 (77)

2014
Unavailable

From 2009-13, LSU averaged 68.78 opponent plays per game while aTm averaged 78.34. So even if Chavis's defensive efficiency stays the same, his defense will give up an additional 44 yards and 2.4 points per game just by being on the field more.

Also consider aTm doesn't have near the depth of LSU... I imagine aTms defensive statistics to resemble '10 and '12 aTm and '13 LSU..... so no, I'm not worried.

He was highly regarded. Was he their DC though?

Not really worried. Steele has surely learned some things from Saban. If we resolve our QB situation (and the jury is very much out on that one), I am not overly concerned about Chavis. Keep in mind that most of the LSU assistants have been around Chavis long enough to know his tendencies. They will game plan to attack those tendencies. The question is moreso whether the athletes will execute the plan.

Well, about 15 minutes worth according to stats.

Answered my own question. Snyder was only DC 1 year before a&m (OSU) and it was their worst record that decade.

Maybe if they get the talent on defense. Chavis isn't very good without elite defensive personnel.

Not only that, but his specialty is linebackers. So we have that, plus an elite DL coach, and an elite secondary coach (possibly the two best in the business). Therefore, all of our units on D should be well-coached.

I doubted him at first, but it really appears that Miles knew exactly what he was doing in bringing in Steele & Orgeron.

I know their D has been bad for quite a while. However, they haven't had a proven DC like chavis. It seems if they're offense stays productive and they add just a little bit of D they can be a tough win.

How good do you think they'll be in the coming years?

he will have an immediate impact, they're that awful, but with the offensive scheme of quick scoring his defense will be on the field a lot and the 1st couple years will be brutal until he can recruit some depth *IMHO*

I agree with what most of you are saying but I also think Charlie Strong will play a big part in how well the Aggy defense progresses. Strong is at the premier Texas program and is going to be procuring a large portion of the defensive talent around the state.

This.

He will bump them up to around 50th IMO. Many aTm fans seem to think that will be more than enough to compete for titles, but it won't be. They need to be top 30, at minimum, to compete in the SEC and Chavis won't get them there until they get some depth.

Football is not that complicated. No coach has a magic formula. It's about evaluating talent first, teaching technique, teaching assignments, and fostering an aggressive, competitive, violent culture.

Certain people do this better than others, but from a skill standpoint, there is not much difference from a defensive "guru" like Chavis to a guy like Mark Snyder. The whole "He can take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his" mantra is a myth.

Nobody wins without talent. It's about the Jim's and Joes not the x's and O's,
