From what I understand, it's probably the majority opinion now. People like Peej still stick up for the 80/90s guys, but that's because he's Peej.

I'm sure both sides could support their case with pretty good arguments
I didn't mean to sound like a dick with the entitled to opinion comment, but in this case it is just kind of an opinion

Hey I know a little bit about basketball. You guys don't give me enough credit on here.

Yea there's no real way to quantify talent from then and now. I don't think anyone would argue that players today are widely more athletic than their 80/90s counterparts, but that doesn't make them better players, necessarily. I just think that they top to bottom talent today is much better than it was then, but again, no way to successfully argue it.

Whoa, let's not go overboard here.

He's right about AAU ball.
The irony though, is Kobe's style of play would never cut it in Europe. The selfishness has always been off the charts, which would never fly over there.

You could argue that the best player vs best player MJ vs Bron and MJ is better
Big men in the 90's were WAAAAAAAAAY better than to today. That's the one category that isn't even close. 80/90s murder today as far as PF/C.
Today probably has better PGs, but it's not like back then was barren of talent (Stockton, Payton, Isiah, Kevin Johnson, Hardaway)

that's funny because Kobe is about the most AAU player in the league...an unrepentant chucker chasing a stupid record to the detriment of his team
I guess he's trying reverse psychology

I'd take Durant & Davis over Malone & Barkley

I'm putting this bitch on the MSB, since this is off topic of the OP anyway
Posted on 1/3/15 at 2:26 pm to danman6336
it's actually on topic, talking about player evolution due to AAU

I hate that rapists ball hog but what he said just then was pure good.

Not saying they are equal, but there is no way to compare the 2 apples-to-apples.

There are problems with AAU. But USAB dominates on every level. The NBA is as good as it's ever been. I would like to see USAB exert more control, but I'm not sure there is a real issue here, unlike in US Soccer. Lets not forget Kobe plays with a bunch of shitty teammates for a shitty coach.
To me, a problem is just how much the NBA has changed in the last decade. AAU, HS, NCAA haven't kept up at all with this massive evolution. For me, watching CBB is like watching a Precambrian version of the sport.
The existential question that needs to be figured out is what is the purpose of these development leagues? To produce NBA players? To make money for handlers, schools, coaches, shoe companies, the NCAA? To promote a healthy lifestyle through basketball and give all comers a chance to play? Decide what the question is and then you can talk about some answers

the sport needs better teachers (coaches) at the grassroots level. fundamentals such as using both hands, passing/catching w/ both hands, blocking out, rebounding and its importance, defensive principles, footwork, basic p&r screening, etc. should be taught in the 7-10 year old range.
make sure the kids know the basics by the time they get to high school. the best coach i played for was in HS and every monday was 'back to basics' practice where we would hammer those fundamentals and our basic half court sets.
it comes down to teaching, AAU is an outlet for some kids, for some its a summer thing and for others its the big show and love it or hate it the colleges will be watching. a lot depends on location as well.

Interestingly enough, Dale Brown of all people has made this point in advocating significant rule changes for the college game.

Yep college basketball has gotten tough to watch. The best teams to watch are the mercer's and Lehigh 's. Teams with seniors that actually learn how to play the game.

He wasn't knocking the narcissism, he was putting down the lack of fundamentals.
If you have flair & fundamentals, Kobe's got no problem with that, as he obviously plays by those rules himself.
But if a rookie big man can only do "fancy" moves entering college or the league, and still can't post up, he thinks that's "crap".
That's where he blames the money-driven AAU for focusing on showtime, instead of development during an optimal time in a player's journey.
