LSU should learn from Texas' mistakes

Miles has been a great coach and ambassador for LSU. His record speaks for itself. There are many on this board who will disagree with this, I know.
Watching him on the sidelines these last 2 years makes me wonder if the game has started to pass him by. Not like most have proposed. (ie: his 1970's junior high practice squad offense). But the management of a major college football program.
Watching Miles lately reminds me of Mack Brown his last few years in Texas. Same dazed look, same lack of emotion. Texas fans saw the decline first hand and are now feeling the aftermath of a program that let their championship winning coach with a 10 win season average stick around too long after his prime.
There is no other program stronger than Texas when it comes to resources to be a championship caliber team. Mack Brown was the anchor weighting them down in the end.
How long will it be until the powers that be notice that Miles is starting the same trend.

Miles would have to go 1-7 in the SEC for the next two seasons for this to be considered. The good news is that Miles recruits way better than Mack Brown.

I don't want to see Miles fired. The man can recruit with the best.
Canning Miles isn't the answer. You'll then be depending on Alleva to make a homerun hire which, arguably, he still has yet to do.
Miles has won an ton of games and his record speaks for itself.
That being said, there needs to be serious improvement to the QB position, and soon. Add to that the play calling and he needs to stop being so stubborn. Not saying he needs to be a pushover but for the good of the team, stop being so stubborn.
I don't want to see our offense reinvented, just so you know.

Why does everyone think a homerun hire has to be made?
Recruiting louisiana hasn't and wont be a problem for anyone competent. There is no instate competition and the talent is plentiful.
The only real question, is if they can moderately develop said talent.

Look at his hires to date, Caldwell, Johnny Jones and Trent Johnson.
Jones could be a great hire, it's certainly looking that way.
Caldwell, I don't know.

Exactly. Time will tell with a hire.
Miles wasn't a homerun hire at the time.
Though some would argue he still isn't.

Mack Brown also had a stellar record. Unlike Miles, he could recruit QB's and develop them.
LSU is one of maybe 10 programs that are in the same position as Texas as far as having the resources to be a successful program. (Financially in the black, fertile recruiting ground)
I'm not saying that anyone can come in and win here, but being the only major football program in a state that could arguably produce more NFL talent per capita than any other state is a big help in winning.

I get what you're saying, but it's not that easy.

Good point. For some reason I was thinking Mac is a lot older than Les, but when I looked it up, he's only 2 years older. I'm not saying Les should be fired this year, but I do think LSU needs to be cautious with this situation. What I mean is, if recruiting starts to take a hit this year, and next year LSU goes 7-5, Les doesn't necessarily need to be fired, but should be on the "hot seat". The schedule isn't going to be easy by any means. LSU has road games @ USCe, Bama, Ole Miss, and MSU. If the Qb situations doesn't drastically improve, I could easily see LSU going 7-5. At the end of the day, Les has earned the right to fix everything, but as I said before, LSU can't afford to let things spiral out of control, imo.

He's here three more seasons barring a total disaster or retirement, in my opinion. It may be a tough three years if a slow decline continues.

This is my biggest fear as an LSU fan right now. Should Miles be fired this year? Absolutely not. He still has time to correct this and right the ship. I will never be his biggest fan after 1/9 (that game pretty much soured me on him forever), but he deserves a chance to turn this around.
In saying that, what he doesn't deserve is to be able to cling onto his job as we slowly fade into the abyss much like Texas did. I follow their program pretty closely, and the whole Mack situation was a complete disaster. Coaches that have good career records and championships (both Mack and Les) are often given way too long of a leash because of their past credentials. This is a terrible thing to do if you want to stay prominent. Texas is a debacle because they let Mack ultimately run them into the ground. It was a slow process though.
It goes without saying that Les and LSU are on a 4 year decline path right now. '12 was worse than '11. '13 worse than '12. '14 worse than '13. If we continue to decline in 2015 something has to be done. We can't let this program end up like Texas's did.

Agree except for one major difference. Texas's recruiting practices hurt them. They locked up their classes way too early and they basically pulled scholarships from those commits who still wanted to take visits.
Recruiting is the only reason Miles is still around. His game management is pitiful compared to coaches at his pay grade, and his desired offensive scheme is archaic, boring, and starting to not be successful. He's been able to hire very good assistants to hide his flaws as a coach.
That said, he is a likeable person and the face of the LSU program. It will be hard to replace that, but if this slide into mediocrity continues next year with all the talent on the roster, then a difficult decision will need to be made for the sake of the program.

I agree to some extent. The man flat out knows how to evaluate talent, other than the qb position. The NFL is loaded with LSU players. On the other hand, Texas didn't have a single player drafted in 2013, which is unbelievable imo.

I agree 100%

Can't go along with you here.
2012 and 2013 were both 10-3 seasons. That's hardly a decline. This season is certainly turning out to be worse than the previous one. But, that's not a surprise. We all knew BEFORE the season, that this YOUNG team would be achieving something if they went 9-3. So, if they go 8-4 it's certainly not the end of the world. Right now, this season is EERILY similar to 2008.................and Miles turned it around in a big way the next three seasons after that. I believe that he'll get it turned around and that we will have better quarterback play next season. If that happens, everything else will fall into place.

It's close, but '12 was a better year IMO. Less losses in regular season, much more competitive in the Bama game, and both losses were to BCS teams instead of two 5-loss teams.
At the end of each season, I felt the '12 team was much closer to a championship than the '13 one. Not saying we sucked in 2013 at all, but I do think there was a slight drop off.
