Peeps from the bayou, how do you pronounce

the name Champagne?

I was intoduced to a girl from down on Bayou Teche and she gave me her business card. On the card her last name is Champagne, but she didn't pronounce like you would the alcoholic beverage of the same spelling. I didn't really catch the way she pronounced it.

she pronounced it the french way, which sounds something like "shompine"...always tough for folks to say it that way...

Well in French the "gn" is very like the "ñ" in Spanish or the "ni" in the word onion.

I always thought it was sham-pag-nee in NOLA and the surrounding parishes

It is pronounced Shaum-pine. I have close relatives with this last name.
