going skiing over christmas for the first time in like 10 years, need a ski jacket but i dont want to spend an insane amount of money on one since i probably wont go skiing again for another 5 or 6 years... anyways... so at costco they are selling a 3 in 1 jacket, looks like it would be perfect for skiing but its not a hard outershell, its a soft shell... so its not waterproof, but it says it is water resistant... is that usable for skiing or should i stick to a hard shell?
yes, not an OT baller, dont care

If it gets wet, you will be in for a bad time.

I used one of those old navy waterproof pullovers one year with some thermal underwear underneath. No issues at all. Very comfortable.

I think you could use it, but you might be a little colder and less comfortable.

In college, had broke friends who would buy jackets and scotchgard them.....they seemed to have no problems

I wear similar when I go in the spring, but in December you'll probably want something warmer. And if you're not an experienced skier you'll probably be falling and want something water proof

He is completely on target with that. Also, don't get something big enough that you start sweating, as it will have the same action.

Polyester Twill Fabric: A durable, breathable and water resistant fabric designed to ensure warmth and dryness all season long. This material has a 10k waterproof rating and a 10k breath-ability rating which will definitely do the trick.
10,000 Waterproof rating: This is a very high waterproof rating, found on the best outdoor gear available. It will keep you dry even in a downpour of rain, and still has the ability to breathe so it doesn't feel like a garbage bag. There are higher rated fabrics, but for average, even above average users, the 10k is more than enough to get the job done.
10,000g Breathability: Not quite like a cotton sweatshirt, but not a rubber suit either, this fabric still does a great job of transporting moisture away from the body so its not a sauna every time it warms up a bit.

I did it once. It was 12 F in the sunlight where I went, and they didn't turn the snow blowers off. Miserable time. Next time I'm bringing a big arse real jacket.

3 in ones are usually worthless. Softshells are fine for competent skiers, preferred for backcountry skiing.
What's your budget
