XOM is now 22% off of its all time high.

Yup- Bought in at $96.79, watched it hit $104, then come on back down... Bought it at $87.27, watched it piddle around that price for a while, then fall. I'll probably buy again at $79, for a nice round average of $87.50 for all three lots.
I buy them 10 shares at a time usually (not OT Baller), but I may double up this time aby buy 20 if it drops too much further- that will bring my average down a little.

You could sell covered calls

Unless I misunderstood, it doesn't sound like he's got 100 shares yet.
Posted on 7/25/15 at 2:09 pm to Jag_Warrior
Oh sorry, I misread. I thought he was buying 100 shares at a time, not 10.

At 6'3", the past few weeks have made me want to be "short".
The wreck in tech (and commodities) has provided some easy pickings.

I took profits and moved my short positions out of the month on oil and out of the money on GILD just incase.

XOM and CVX
Does anyone know when the last time XOM was yielding 3.7% and CVX was yielding 4.8%? I assume it has been at least 30 years if ever

I would say in the 2009-10 timeframe.
Posted on 7/27/15 at 11:26 pm to Jag_Warrior
2.64% in 2009 and 2.38% is 2010 for XOM. Not even close to what it is at today

Please someone tell if I should buy some XOM or CVX at this point? I'm tired of watching my tech stocks take a dump for no reason other than dumb arse speculators. Oh no, Apple didn't sell 48 million phones, just 47.5mm you fricks... Yes I'm angry
I do not own any O&G and just reading the last couple pages seems like these 2 are maybe ripe for the picking? I have been wanting to get in just never have any O&G.

XOM has kind of stalled over the past few days so I got scared and purchased. If it goes down more I'll just buy more.

Word is Twitter is trying to hedge their bad quarterly report by announcing a new CEO during their call this afternoon. Will it stop the bleeding? I don't know, but I'm inclined to say no.

My FB stock is up 25% over the last year or so.
AAPL although is struggling. I may move it to FB once I break even.

Wow, that was one hell of a roller coaster.
That's why we listen to the whole conference call. Still, some shrewd after hours traders got a good 10 minute pump and dump.
If Twitter plummets tomorrow, is anyone buying?

You're right. XOM has been steadily raising the dividend along the way. Even compared to the recessionary lows, this is a good yield level for them.
I took a limit order for BP off the table early this morning when a report stated that if there's further weakness in the oil market, their dividend could be in danger of being cut. I'm content to sit and watch for now. Although XOM goes ex-div in a couple of weeks. So I guess if someone wants to take a position, collecting a payment might provide some cushion.

Please believe me, I'm not being a smart azz. But why do you need to break even before you sell out of AAPL and buy FB? What if FB moves up 10%, while you're waiting for AAPL to move up 5% to get to that break even point?
It's just something that came up frequently in a book I read about the psychology of trading and investing many years ago. It's a very common thing for people to say and believe. Anyway, hope that trade works for you.

ACE buying Chubb, even if it gets held up, is interesting to me. Both should benefit from a higher interest rate climate, and both within reason are conservative. Nice yield(s). Chubb is trading at its buyout price, but I think ACE is attractive at current levels for the reasons mentioned above, and a bunch of others I won't bore you with.
I generally like regional property/casualty insurers, so this is a departure from what I normally do. We'll be through the 2nd quarter which is treacherous for a lot of these carriers. Having said this, both Ace and Chubb, given their national and international exposures, are tougher to predict from a cat. loss perspective.
Not very exciting. Most of what I do isn't.
