Ruth Bader Ginsberg Explains Why She's Not Stepping Down

She says she doesn't trust Obama to appoint someone as liberal as her.

Ginsburg, who is 81, also pushed back against calls for her to step down before President Barack Obama leaves office, which would allow him to appoint another liberal justice to the Supreme Court. Ginsburg said Senate Republicans would use a filibuster to block anyone Obama would pick.
“If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court,” Ginsburg said. "So anybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they’re misguided. As long as I can do the job full steam…. I think I’ll recognize when the time comes that I can’t any longer. But now I can.”

Don't they all judge until they keel over?

Obama would probably nominate Eric Holder.

She says she doesn't trust Obama to appoint someone as liberal as her.
And if "someone like me" refers to competence I would agree. I, too, would not expect Obama to make that high quality of an appointment. He certainly didn't in his first two opportunities.
Perhaps she's looking at her two fellow justices and see the quality (not the leaning)? I mean as long as we're speculating... From shredded up quotes...
Also notable, it's a poorly worded article with a lot of chopped up quotes intermixed with the writers slant. ... poorly done for Huffpo's normal standards.

the fact is that she's under no obligation to step down until she's good and ready for any reason she chooses. That's the privilege of the positions she holds.

yet, if it was Scalia, you'd be crying for his resignation

if the situation were reversed, you think i would have a problem with Scallia not wanting to resign while a Republican was in office?

I think both scalia and ginsburg should retire. we need some judges that understand computers, there are going to be a slew of privacy issues that are going to crop up in the next 10 years....we can't have techno illiterates on the bench.

Which demographic group will be represented by the next choice?
Asian?
Transgender?
Undocumented worker?

She could just as easily mean Red Sox fan or stamp collector. But she means liberal.

In fairness, conservatives try to make sure they eject when there's a Republican in the White House.

She better hope she can make it though 4-8 years if a there's a republican POTUS in 2017.
It's not just Gunsburg but there's the possibility of the next President getting to appoint Replacements for Kennedy, Scalia, Thomas, and Breyer as they are up there in age with Ginsburg. That's 5 appointments that could change the makeup of the court for at least a generation. I hope it's Rand Paul doing the appointing.

This is what Scalia, Kennedy and Thomas are thinking right now. Dependent on a republican POTUS, they're not retiring until Obama leaves office.
