In the wake of a horrific botched execution via lethal injection earlier this year, an Oklahoma politician is asking the state to consider a completely new method of killing condemned prisoners: nitrogen gas.

State lawmakers on Tuesday held a hearing to discuss the proposal, first raised by State Rep. Mike Christian (R). The process would involve prisoners being placed in a sealed chamber or donning a gas mask that gradually replaces oxygen with nitrogen, resulting in hypoxia — or oxygen deprivation.

"I think it's groundbreaking, I think it's innovative, I think it's going to be efficient and practical," Christian said. Christian previously proposed bringing back the firing squad, but determined nitrogen would be more humane and foolproof.

In April, the state executed Clayton Lockett using an untested drug cocktail. Lockett writhed on a gurney for 43 minutes before dying.

I'm praying this catches on in death penalty states and its the way to go. We should be using nitrogen asphyxiation or hypoxia. Two very painless forms of execution, you just breathe and then drift off to sleep and never wake up. It's unbelievable they aren't used for the DP. It'd prevent a mess like what we have making the rounds through the courts now these days.

It doesn't bother me that they may suffer a little bit.

When done properly, firing squad, hanging, and guillotine are all quick and painless. I've always thought the psychological factor of the mess created by the guillotine would be a better deterrent than any currently used methods. Assuming we believe the death penalty is supposed to be a deterrent to potential criminals of course.

I think we should bring back hanging, the guillotine or the firing squad. Anyone of which I would be fine with.

I support the use of the death penalty but never thought of it as an effective deterrent- most of the crimes punishable by the death penalty involve the offending party potentially risking their lives for the crime itself. For instance, if you're going to go into a store and rob it, there's already the chance of the shopkeeper shooting you in self- defense.

Asphyxiation in general is practically a perfect way of execution. Until the moment you go to sleep, You don't realize anything is wrong. In fact, you begin to feel great and super confident until the moment of unconsciousness.

Oh, and its cheap.

In practicality I agree since we have to make the executions "humane" to avoid having the DP completely outlawed. Never mind that the murders usually weren't.

In reality I prefer steel cable with "Renegade" playing in the background.

Hey, wait a minute. Isn't that what dentists give you when you have anxiety about getting your teeth cleaned?
