The BMW is more expensive to fix, change oil, etc.
The Nissan is more practical but who's paying the bills on repairs and maintenance?
I'd shop around more. You can get some really nice cars for 12k. Check out some Accords, Camrys, and maybe some small suvs

beemer's are only good if you have a non-existent lifetime warranty that covers everything. their engines are awesome, but every fricking thing else goes wrong with them, a lot.

Going from a BMW to a Cherokee is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

That would be me.
I thought about maintenance and figured it would be higher. Just something about paying that much for an Altima. She doesn't like Camrys - Accords are more expensive than Altimas.
Thanks for the wisdom - might keep looking a little longer.

I think the BMW is a steal if you are okay with the increased costs of ownership. The CVT transmission in the Altima is a very expensive thing to replace if it goes.....and they do occasionally break. The BMW has a traditional transmission.
I'd go with the BMW, but budget expensive service visits.

You already touched on this but DO NOT buy any car for a kid until you get a solid insurance quote. Buddy took daughter shopping on Saturday for a reliable sensible ride and got talked into a cool 2 door sportster car at a great price. Finds out on Monday his insurance doubled because of the car type. He could have bought her a new Accord for what he is spending in insurance and used car note.

maybe we just got lucky. we bought our oldest a 2010 mazda 3 with about 60K for about a 1K less than that altma

My girlfriend had a BMW and I will never own one. That car was in and out of the shop more than any other car I have seen. Plus a lot of mechanics won't touch them and they cost a ton for repairs.

That Bimmer is a poor decision.
Eta: you can scoop a 2014 Altima for eighteen grand. Just a thought.

Be very careful with Nissan Altima. They had some serious transmission issues during that time frame.
^This.

I wouldn't buy either car. And yeah, that Altima seems way overpriced. Bluebook value is about $9K. I would laugh in their face if they tried to sell me a 7 year old car for $13K.
Get a more reliable car. I have a really old toyota (10+ years) and it has given me very few problems.

Do NOT buy that BMW. Look for a used Accord, Camry, Civic, Corolla, maybe Mazda 3. Nothing else.
All very sound advice. Remember, whatever you buy is gonna get dinged, trashed, and wrecked. You need something bullet proof and easily repairable.

Just some advice here. I bought a certified pre owned 09 camry sport with 35k miles on it. The sticker was like 19k i think and i got it for about 15k. I even got a warranty tossed in to cover up to 100k miles.
I know the lady doesn't like the camry but im looking more at the deal. You could take your 10k and go a little higher to get a better car. I wouldn't buy either one of those cars at the price listed. 12k for a base line altima with 101k miles on it is insane. I wouldn't pay over 8k for that car. The BMW I wouldn't F with.
