Point being, if you want people to make a big deal out of who you were, die young.
the fact that people would even mention Chris Farley in the same breath as Robin Williams pretty much proves your point

Death of comedians most significnt is Jonathon Winters because he was an inspiration to the Williams era comics. The Winters/Williams Tonight show appearance may be the most entertaining talk show appearance by either.

Phillip Hoffman. Both were surprises and both were great actors.

So, not that far.

Hope's career wasn't celebrated nearly as much at his time of death because nobody was old enough to remember what a big deal he was.
Most people understood how big a star Hope was -- and he was a much bigger star than Robin Williams; Hope was essentially an American institution.

But by the time Hope died he was seen as history by the target demo that drives media coverage. And this demo is not interested in history. So the coverage of his death was respectful, but sensational.

I've seen the video of NBC's coverage of the death of Jack Benny (who? yes he was a big star) in 1974. Benny was 80, a fixture on radio and TV for 3 decades, and NBC gave him a half hour tribute after the late news (bumping Carson). Did Carson himself even get that when he died 30 years later? Compare the media reaction to Carson's death to that of Whitney Houston.

Media coverage of celebrity death has been altered by demographics, just like everything else in the media.

In the past 5 years, Michael Jackson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Walker has to be the top 3.

In my l ifetime, the most significant celeb deaths I recall...those that are brought up in conversation from time to time are Cobain, Princess Diana, MJ, Ledger, Irwin & now Robin Williams I think will be in that group. You could maybe throw Reagan in but he was 90+ and in poor health by the end whereas the rest were far younger.

I'll never forget when it happened. Not because of it being Michael Jackson but because it was the day after LSU won the CWS on the way home.

Only answer is Michael Jackson if we're talking international fame.

There's been a lot of sudden, celebrity/talented peoples' deaths in the same timeframe, but none were as huge as RW and MJ.

You should read about the murder of John Lennon. Very shocking. Worldwide, he was at least as big of a star as Elvis.

It has been the biggest death since Withney Houston. I have seen alot of people say Paul Walker, but honestly alot of people had no idea who he was unless he was described as the guy on Fast and Furious.

I have seen people put down MJ saying he was not universally loved. WTF is universally loved. There is not a person on this person is universally loved I guarantee that. Something about MJ, he was universally known, there was not a soul on this planet who did not know MJ. He may have been Wacko Jacko, but there is a reason EVERY radio station was playing his music for atleast 2 weeks straight.

I really don't think that you can go back past Princess Diana for anyone. You might debate it up until then, but she is the biggest death of the late 20th century.

Michael Jackson would win this hands-down if he wasn't such a freak. But, because of his ways, there is some debate there.

Agree on all counts.
