Does Welter prove his haters wrong this season?

I have been one of his biggest critics since last season. But, the guy looks like he's put on some serious weight, and CLM and Chief are raving about his progress from the spring through the summer. Could he possibly be a star of this super talented defense this season?
Btw, I like Beckwith to be at the Mike this season, but wanted to get the rants perspective.

I don't think he would get as much hate if Beckwith wasn't behind him. Mike linebacker is one position that experience can sometimes cover a lack of athleticism. Not that he isn't athletic but compared to Beckwith he's far off. We need that intelligent player that will remember what everyone needs to be doing when the pressure is on and other players nerves are getting the best of them. They will look to him in those times for stability... So the answer to your question is yes.
Probably won't ever be a star but his presence on the field will allow other players to become stars and fulfill their potential.

Les also raved about JJ only for him to actually get worse

is it because Welter is white that the 'haters' feel good about themselves knocking him?

If Chief says he's improved, who am I to argue. I'm skeptical, but not dismissive. And to me, he did seem to improve as the season went on.
With so many young one's behind Welter in the D-backfield, I'll take moderate improvement and good playcalling/leadership.

Who is this Welter guy? This morning's Baton Rouge newspaper wrote about a guy named Walter.

It's hard to fix slow.
And his timed 40 may be ok, but on the field he's slow as frick.

Unless he gained an extra gear and got better at tackling, no

People who take up for him, clearly did not watch him. He was a special kind of bad. Don't say it is because he's white, or because he is slow, or weak. He honestly just looks terrible out there. He runs to the guard or center, takes on the block, allows himself to get pushed back 5 yards, then finds the ball and jumps on the pile, or tracks down the player with a good angle and makes the play 9 yards down field.
I honestly don't see how some people don't see this. It's a common occurrence, and that is not what your Mike should do. We have young guys behind them that are more than capable if they're allowed to be coached up. That's why people get so fed up. We are wasting years of players who have elite talent, for what?
Also, I'm so sick of hearing the coaches know more. They put beckwith at DE last year so he couldn't learn Mike, then subbed Welter off for 2-3 series almost every game because he was so bad. Problem was they put Lamar Louis in who is extremely undersized for Mike. There is no possible way they could watch film and love what Welter did

There is no way a player can totally suck at his position in his first year of starting, get totally abused by the fans,to getting better in the offseason and possibly one of the most relied upon players the next year.

"haters" aka people that have functioning eyeballs and watch him play.

Honestly, I think he'll improve most likely, but not enough. It's in Chavis and Miles' hands, not like us debating it means much.
As those saying Chavis knows more than anyone on this board, while likely true, it doesn't make him infallible.
Miles and Chavis both have major flaws despite how good they've been. Sometimes they simply make the wrong decisions. Look at the 2012 Bama game for an example.
In the end, Welter's reaction time and reflexes are horrible and while he may diagnose a play right, he doesn't do it fast enough or react to that identification quick enough to be even a middle of the road MLB.
You can't fix that and it has nothing to do with his 40 time.

Does he have the speed to get to his spots? That has been his issue since he's been at LSU. He makes the correct reads, but just does not have the foot speed to make the play.

There were several games last season where Welter led the team in tackles. I've never understood the criticism. Dude quietly gets things done on the field. Maybe this year he can develop a new post-tackle dance. That might bring some people around.
