I will happily entertain any question you have about rocks!
If you have a question about rocks like how they are made, what they are made of, or where you can find them.
If you've always wanted to know what your counter is made of or the gravel in your driveway is made of, now is your chance!
The floor is also open to philosophy like how we classify rocks can make other inferences about rocks like age, formation conditions, and the like!
I will try and do better with pictures this time around. Let's start this off right and have an all-encompassing pic of the rock cycle and some of the rock names bound to pop up in this thread:
Have fun and ask away!
Here's the previous two threads like this I have done:
State Fossil
Volcanoes

I'm sedimentary, but I'm not a rock. Why?

Here at the foot of Pikes Peak there is a lot of what's known as Pikes Peak granite. It is a pinkish granite due to it containing a lot of potassium feldspar minerals. Sometimes I see big chunks of PP granite that have alternating layers of pink granite and dark gray granite. So my question is that given that granite is composed of magma that cooled slowly, what causes the striations or layers in these rocks?

What do you know about turquoise?
Turquoise is a phosphate mineral whose copper content gives it the color of the Statue of Liberty due to oxidation. I guess a big piece could be a rock.
