how is marriage unnatural?
It is a social construct. We could argue whether monogamy is natural. Many believe it is unnatural. Just look at the divorce rate and how many are because of infidelity.

I honestly would 100% be in favor of using my tax dollars to pay for free birth control if it meant abortion would be outlawed and made a felony manslaughter.
How would others feel?
I think making abortion illegal is a stupid idea.

Social constructs are natural.

quote:That "purpose" of marriage is your religious belief. Many people get married with no intention of having kids.
Sex and Marriage fall under the same umbrella. The purpose of these two is the union of spouses in order to produce offspring.
I would bet that 99% of the time that people have sex it is without the intention of having kids.
The concept of "marriage" is an invention of mankind. Monogamous relationships exist without it, and may in fact be better off without it.

my friend administers one of the programs that was part of this.
close to 100% of the funding came from private sources (for her program) FWIW, the rest was part of health grants given by the feds or states. Its a fricking win-win-win. No one but those against birth control lose in this fight.

naturally, that's not what we're programmed to do as men

I'm pretty sure that planned parenthood will give a year supply at a time, for free.
At least they used to. I would still think that they do.
you would think they still do but the right has inexplicably waged war against PP and in many places have succeeded in getting their budgets slashed.

If a man is good at timing himself, we wouldn't even be having this debate.

I'm not privy to their inner workings but from what i have learned from talking to people who work/worked for PP yes, they have had to cut a lot of services.

quote:Maybe so, but considering the main function of PP is birth control and family planning, they probably have cut services that are "secondary".

You don't know the decisions they have to make any more than i do. All I know is that the right has gone after PP across the country for religious zealotry reasons, which has effected their services. Even the most hardened libertarian should be able to see that the education of low income women and giving them the tools to prevent unwanted pregnancies will reduce abortions and the financial burden put on society as these generations grow up disproportionately reliant on the state.

i am privy to the inner workings (relative worked there for years, and is still connected).
They didn't just cut secondary services like mammograms, they are closing clinics, raising prices and cutting subsidies.
access to family planning, mainly birth control, is down for poor people. The middle class still have plenty of access b.c a ton of drs do abortions in their clinics (most ppl don't know that). The rich white girls don't have to go to PP for their fix, they just go with the copay at the drs office.

quote:Maybe they are also seeing a decline in private donations? Around 75% of PP is funded by private funds. In a sluggish economy like this, a lot of households just don't have the funds to donate

all because of the right
which will only serve to increase tax dollars spent on entitlements in future years, oh the irony

no, if anything they are getting more as they mobilize politically to try to fight the republicans going after them.

If welfare is the problem, why not reform it specifically rather than create another dependency program to fight it?

quote:Seriously, I don't see the problem with this. I am sick and tired of the low expectations Liberals have when it comes to poor people, thinking they literally need all services for free.
Good. Let them get all of their funding from private donations.
I remember back when the ACA was being rolled out, and some of people were saying that poor people weren't signing up because they couldn't afford a computer!

yeah because that's realistic.
this is just another example of the myopic idea that all services for the poor should be privately funded. Well what happens when demand outstrips supply? I guess just let people starve on the street? fricking ridiculous.
