I consider Holiday and Evans to be very solid players and good acquisitions, even if a little overpaid. But overpaying was probably inevitable and necessary to get deals done at the time. Yeah, our salary structure is out of whack at the moment. But it's not as permanent or inflexible as some of the naysayers portray. I like the talent on this team for the most part.

I think that's what people fail to realize. EG is here for at most 2 more years on that heavy contract, Asik is only on a 8mil cap hit, Jrue/Reke are actually on decent deals if you look at the production compared to other players at their position. We're in year 3 of AD rebuild and we still have another 6 years before he can legitimately leave on his own, we need to make the playoffs this year and build on it.

It is what it is, but if we built through the draft, we wouldn't be in a situation like OKC or Indy where they built through the draft. Even OKC/Durant took a few years to get to 'playoff' caliber and then 'championship' caliber. Look at what we could have drafted, there are no westbrook, harden, stephenson, hibbert, george, etc. that we know of thus far from the 2013 draft. Doesn't seem if there would be at #10 either from the 2014 draft. Is there a better center that we could possibly get in the mid teens for 2015? He's one of the better interior defenders, has a high rebound %, and doesn't need to shoot the ball much if at all.

Trading in hindsight we may have given up a lot of picks, but the players we got in return have thus far been better.

paying a guy 8M (really a lot more)

So, we are paying 3 extra million a year (actually closer to 10M)

who is your rim protector for this team? robin lopez is not a rim protector and is mediocre on defense. anthony davis can't play the role (he's a support guy like ibaka who can't anchor a defense from the rim)

Probably so. Although with a player like AD I think we have more of a chance of catching lightning in a bottle than Memphis or Portland. It could happen a la San Antonio IF the stars aligned and Monty grew as a coach.

This.

Long term, I'm still not sure if there is a true 2nd banana on this roster, but Davis just might be good enough to cover for that.

Like how we are celebrating picking up career back-up Center that is going to make 15M this coming season. Who by the way just missed half this past season with an injury..

I've always been a little bit critical of Asik, mostly to frick with Rocket fans.

But you couldn't be more wrong. He's not a career backup, first of all. He started 82 games in 12-13 and played really well. Second, he was "injured" last year.

He's very good at what he does: rebound and protect the rim. He's a really good compliment to Davis, as long as we have some shooters and Davis keeps extending his range. Its a good fit and in this day and age where big men are rare, 8 million is fine for him.

So, we're just going to ignore that you are allowed to play defense in the NBA?

I'm not good at arguing metrics and such, but here is an article from a guy suggesting that R. Lopez to be named to the all NBA defensive team.. LINK /

NOLA = Small Market with a big superstar in the making. Gotta do what you can to keep him here or he will jump ship for the lights of the big city. Sometimes it means a bad contract here and there but you do what you gotta do. Its unheard of to have the drafting success of OKC so you can't bank on that.

Use your fricking eyes man. Robin Lopez is not good defensively at all. He did well in Portland because they have a good team with a GREAT PF in Aldridge and lots of talent around him. Once he got into the playoffs and played actual great big men, he was crushed like a baby mouse under a sledgehammer.

Good point. Who knows, AD plus four very solid players and a good bench could win a lot of games. Besides, who's to say within the next couple of years we don't pick up that second banana?

Absolutely. Will be very interesting to see what happens to Anderson and where they go with Holiday/Evans in the next couple of years.

I'm excited about the team. With health, they should be good. Just a brutal West though.

a wise man once said you cannot truly know someone until you know what they want. what do benson/demps/loomis/etc want? what do we as fans want?

is good/better enough?
is it WCF or bust?
how about just an exciting team in a fun and engaged home arena?

For now I'll be happy with a team that's a lock for the playoffs and can run the table if they get the right draws/breaks. ie the Grizzlies the past few years. Once AD hits his prime, I think it will be finals or bust.

Same here, going to games without the hope of post season doesn't make the season exciting. Especially when you're realistically out of the playoffs with 30+ games to go.

On the other hand, who's to say AD doesn't go play with a team of bananas somewhere else and leave the pelicans in mediocrity?

We need another star banana and a deep playoff run sooner rather than later

There is no shame in being a playoff team but not a title contender on a regular basis. Ultimately, you try to get a title, but penthouse or outhouse arent the only two options.

I do think it's fair to worry that this team might not be a playoff team due to brutal competition. Doesn't mean the moves are wrong though. They just might not be good enough. shite happens

me too
40 games is a grind, even if its supposedly entertainment. sitting in a disinterested half-empty arena where the loudest voices are the beer vendors gets old, quickly

the most fun ive had at the area in the past few years was that lakers game which we will not discuss. had a blast, arena was loud, atmosphere was awesome...

just give me 20 to 30 of those, i'll keep writing my checks and keep making the drive

Right, because LeBron and Dwight making the Finals earlier in their career made them stick around for their 3rd contract. This team doesn't need to be contenders now, they need to be contenders in 2019-20.

We disagree on that. I would say the Pelicans team disagrees on that also.

LeBron left because there was no help in Cleveland. Not because they weren't successful.

He saw the moves they made and realized they would never give him the supporting cast he needed to win a title. I mean those Cleveland rosters were abominable.
