So to appease my mother, we are taking a small family vacation to the smokies in a few weeks.

Any recommendations on dining options? We like local places, mom and pops etc. Don't mind driving a good distance either. Thanks!

Just got back from Gatlinburg. My wife and I cooked almost all our meals in the cabin, so they were delicious.

On the last night, we went to a steak house called Alamo's on East Parkway. Had one of the best steaks I've had in a while there. Everything was good so I recommend the place.

Old Mill Restaurant in Pigeon Forge was delicious as well. They are near Pigeon Forge Pottery, which is a nice place to shop.

You can't throw a rock in gatlinburg without hitting a pancake place.

I like Apple Barn. It's in Pigeon Forge, not too far from gatlinburg.

I'll second the apple barn. My parents have a time share up there so we went there all the time growing up. It has been a while since I have gone up there so I don't know of any other current restaurants

Bean Trees Cafe in Hartford, TN. It's near all the white water rafting companies. Hippie little place that serves some pretty good food.

Franklin, NC

Center of town there is a gas station called the Hot Spot. Attached to that is a little restaurant called Caffe REL.

It's closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Enjoy...

Also, if you go out that way, take the ride into Highlands, NC. There are lot more good restaurants there as well, but Caffe REL will suprise the crap out of you.

If you're driving from Louisiana, detour off the Interstate to the old highway in Madisonville, TN on the way to Gatlinburg, stop at Benton's Hams, and load up on as much bacon and ham as he will sell you.

Best Italian Cafe and Pizzeria next to Cherokee Grill on Parkway is pretty legit Italian. Apparently they have another restaurant w/ similar name on same street.
