If I had a nickel for every time one of those dirty commies told me his credit card machine was broken I'd be retired. Frick the cab drivers.
Welcome to New Orleans our politicians can't wait to rob you blind:
Home Depot government relations vice president Kent Knutson also testified, describing Nagin and the community groups as quote, “shake down artists.”
Knutson told the jury, “Everybody wanted something.”

So what happens if you get in the cab, they drive you to your destination, you don't have cash (or enough cash) and they claim the CC machine is broken? Can you just insist that they call HQ?

They generally tell you that it is broken before you even get in the cab. During Mardi Gras, I was told on more than one occasion that the credit card was broken by a passenger the night before and that it couldn't be fixed until tomorrow.

Driving back to the office yesterday, two or three people who represent the cab industry were on one of the WWL talk shows. Basically, they oppose Uber on two fronts.
1) UberX haa unregulated drivers/cabs
2) It's not fair that Uber and their new technology are trying to displace/disrupt taxi cabs and their old technology, but if we give the taxi industry a few years, they will try to catch up.
As to the 1st point, I can understand wanting a regulated taxi industry with certified vehicles and drivers. However, considering what passes for a taxi and a taxi driver these days in the city, it's hard for me to believe that there is any actual current regulation/enforcement taking place.
2) Uhh... no. As it is... the insanely, insanely corrupt CPNC system in the city creates a monopoly. As any cable company customer can tell you, a monopoly ensures crappy, outdated service. Innovation is making a run at your business, cab drivers? I'm sorry... welcome to the rest of the world. Any sympathy I had for them went out the window when I heard that line.

Is Uber sketchy at all? I've never heard anything but really good things about it.
ETA: I read the other Uber thread. Looks cool to me

Of course it's not sketchy.

Where I have used it in other cities, I have not had any problems at all.
Just saying I can understand where the more traditional cabbies might have a valid concern. We probably need to regulate/inspect all drivers for hire, or none of them.

The people to email are Mose Jefferson and former Senator Heitmeyer. They control the cabs in this city. The Mayor isn't going to fight for Uber, he barely got the cabs to put non-working credit card machines in their cars
What is the Senator's email and/or twitter (if applicable)?
Posted on 6/12/14 at 4:05 pm to LSUzealot
I want to know Heitmeyer's email and/or Twitter too. Malachi as well.

He is a FORMER Senator from NO. I think his nephew is a current State Rep from the Westbank.
Posted on 6/12/14 at 5:10 pm to goinallout
It is his brother State senator, that is my district. Didn't know they had anything to do with cabs.
BTW- Don't email Moses Jefferson he died in jail back in 2011

My friends who go to SMU in Dallas love it. The driver/passengers have to rate each other after you've reached your destination and if you score below a 4 (or something) you're not able to drive or ride. Very good service
