As someone who has tried and failed, and then had to run home... And as someone who has succeeded and never looked back... truer words haven't been spoken. No one ever died wishing they'd taken less chances in life. Go for it. Seize every opportunity. Don't have any regrets.

"What might have been" is my biggest fear. I'd rather fail a dozen times than not find out what it's like.

Lived there for two months in San Jose. I enjoyed it, Cali is overly hated, although I did not like the natives in San Fran all that much. It's a pretty cool place to live. Just have a sharp tongue, and you should be fine.

California is not as "liberal" as people think. Aside from LA and San Fran, the state is purple, and even slightly conservative. (white people here are very conservative). Orange County is just as republican, if not more, than many southern states.

Seriously, orange county (where I live) is the farthest thing from the California stereotype politically and culturally.

This is spot on.

And if you're catching on at the university - I'm assuming a tenure-track position - you'll do fine over time money-wise provided you perform to expectations.

I know there is a general dislike for California but I kind of liked what I saw.

There is so much to love about California. I lived near San Fran for several years and there are an unbelievable amount of really incredible places within a few hours drive.

There were definitely things I didn't like too, and real estate prices were right up there. We still have friends there, and most of them will probably never own their own home. Like someone mentioned, there are places where real estate is pretty affordable... I'm drawing a blank as to which of those places I would want to live though. SLO isn't exactly one of the most expensive places in Cali, but you're probably still looking at $300-$400 per square foot in a nice neighborhood. I don't have stats to back it up, but I'm pretty sure a lot more middle class folks rent in California than in the south.

I guess it all depends on what is important to you. If you really dig SLO, don't let politics or some ignorant people's perception of California dissuade you.

This is pretty much my opinion as well.

ETA-SLO average high-69 degrees, average low-49 degrees.

That I can agree with. It's true, most people in Louisiana hate California and they haven't even been there.

People from Louisiana hate everything that isn't Louisiana.

I really believe California is one of the best places in the world. There are some major negatives that I wish could be fixed (politics and cost) but the state is gorgeous, and there is so much to do within a day's drive. I can't speak to SLO because I haven't been, but LA, San Fran, and San Diego are all awesome. You are also close to Vegas, Sequoia, a few ski and board parks, and the Grand Canyon.

However, I'm not sure I would live out here if I was still in business like I used to be. Jobs out here are extremely tough to find. But since you have one go for it. You'll love it. Just don't stay in the middle class out here for long. It's better to be poor or rich.

I would rather live 4-5 hours south of there but it is still probably one of the best places to live in the world!

GTFOT!
Get the frack out there!

The only thing that bothers me about Cali is potentially being there for a bad earthquake. Other than that, as you'll have some resources, it's pretty damn great. As to the alleged weirdos there, as the character Lawrence from Office Space said: "Watch out for your cornhole, bud.".

Just kidding. It's a social trend-setter. Conservative folks in the rest of the US hate to hear that, but it's mores are ahead of most of the rest of the country.

Good luck.

all the one and done porn stars....little miss too big for this small town....all the commission only sales jobs promising 150k the first year if you just work hard enough....all the trendy stock bubble bursts, all the get rich quick schemes....

bullshite...more people would be happier if they just followed the straight and narrow path.

OP...get a job no one wants(manager McDonald's or Riteaid or something) and just work there for 12-15 years....you'll be better off as a Regional Manager(or better) than running after opportunity after opportunity, job and city hoping looking for the next best thing...Ive seen it time and time again....all these "studs" chase the money..."I'll be making almost 200k in 2 years"...nope

what's the job that they have to recruit from 2300 miles away? You better be a specialist in something, otherwise something's fishy.

PS: I live in SF....I hate it. It might just be metro areas, but when you have a bunch of 3rd world shite crammed in a tiny space...everyone becomes third world...SLO may be different...but the standards in SF are shite...you have to watch everything because as soon as you think, "it should be fine", wrong, you got fricked( I don't like living that way)

PSS: San Diego is great and am trying to get back there....SF can die...seriously, I wouldn't shed a tear if it got lost at sea in the next big one.

I've lived in the south sf bay my whole life. The weather is unbeatable, and you're close to lots of shite. I'm as liberal as they come, but the only time a conservative will feel out of place is if they are on the campus of uc-Berkeley. I work with people of all political leanings, and it's not a huge deal. We're all people trying to live a happy life when it comes down to the root. It's affordable to live here but you might not have all the amenities and space you could get elsewhere. Good luck, and if you're ever in San Jose, I'll buy you a beer and a shot of bourbon.

Some good friends live in Ventura, which is a couple of hours further down the coast highway. Best weather on the planet. Their house doesn't have AC or central heat. I'd move there in a heartbeat. Don't listen to the haters. People around here are too wedded to their ideology to consider anything else.

One thing I have noticed after more than a decade of living here:

For some reason, you rarely, if ever, see LSU attire/fans, even though you'll see TONS of gumps, mountain gumps, Georgia fans, and Florida fans. Hell, I think I have seen more Ole Miss shirts here than LSU shirts.

IIRC, there's a decently big LSU alumni base in L.A. and S.D. Not so much in NorCal.

This ^^... I live there and like it. I go camping, hiking and skiing. It is a fun place that can wear on you a bit. I keep a close circle of friends with similar outlooks on life and have a larger group of eclectic friends that are great people. You will encounter the hippie, the commie, the hipster liberal, and the protester, so never discuss religion or politics in large groups and just stomach the absolute liberal commie shite that will spew forth when you get around some of them. As a Southerner you should be able to drink their asses under the table, so use that as a weapon to assert Southern Alpha (just kidding! sort of... maybe)

However, outside of the major cities, it is a different story. The native Californians are a lot like Southerners and are fantastic people. There are so few of them really. Tons of foreigners! You will like if you are single and young - go for it!

Bottom line, with the costs, your job isn't much better. You may make more money, but you sow d your life around liberals, high taxes, high prices, and an ever increasing illegal immigrant population. Don't forget the constant drought conditions.
But the weather is nice. Yippeeee

frick that place. Beautiful and all, but run by liberal idiots who give non Americans more attention and sympathy than our veterans.

Angry much? It's a good job, professor at a university, so I'm not chasing some crazy dream of a paycheck that may or may not be there. The reason they are recruiting from 2300 miles away is that there are only 6 universities that offer the degree I have and texas a&m is the furthest west.

Not sure that is true, but certainly more people would.

I couldn't live in a state and city (bay area, for example) that worked against what I believe in 24/7.

But if you could combine the economic power and governance of Texas with the natural beauty of California, everyone would live there.
