Why is prostitution illegal?

Lots of arguments in favor of abortion give the reasoning "a women should be able to do anything with her body". Why then, are so many people (conservative and liberal alike) against women doing what they want with their bodies and having sex for money? It's legal when it's filmed (porn) so why the f--- is it not legal otherwise? I'm talking well-regulated, taxed, brothels, and obviously no underage women.
Our government needs to stop trying to legislate personal morals.

If I remember right some of the first abortion laws were passed to try and stop the spread of STD's. It then turned into a morality thing.

Also. Even with the above being true, my guess is that the majority of Americans wouldn't care if it were legal BUT.........and here's the rub.....
NO ONE wants to be the guy who proposes the "let prostitution be legal" bill. Any guy who does is gonna be portrayed as.........well...........I think you can figure that part out.
Any woman who does will be lambasted as supporting the objectification of women.
