Per wiki, he has a thick cajun accent.
This will assuredly get screwed up in the movie
I don't seem Tatum as Gambit right now....but I'll reserve judgment. I didn't see Heath Ledger as The Joker either.

Looks wise he is a perfect fit IMO. He needs to have a slight accent, otherwise it won't come off well.

Probably because Chris Claremont had no idea what people from NO sound like. They very rarely say "chere" when addressing anyone.

I have seen the future and the fall of comic movies will come from Fox and Sony trying to squeeze too much out of X-Men and Spiderman.
They'll drive the properties into the ground before Marvel ever gets them back.
This is a good call. And it sucks. 3 Avengers movies a year is just about a perfect amount.
And to think I probably liked X-Men more as a kid.

If only there was a way to get background into a movie...
But the amount of background you need is akin to shrinking the core of Wolverine's character into the first 15 minutes of Origins. It didn't work and the entire shift of the film suffered. Granted that movie has more problems than that.
The issue is the starting point for Gambit. For Wolverine it works, because his origin, primarily, is focused around is initial amnesia. So it was natural to introduce and focus on Wolverine as we did in X1-X2 and his further films. His evolution needed him to kind of come in blind.
Gambit is kind of redeemed by the X-Men in his first appearance, and his identity is kind of centered on that redemption. The problem is the "stand alone" part. Without his introduction that kind of redemption won't be tied to the team.
And the Thieve's Guild is uniquely related to the X-verse, we're talking Sinister, Shadow King, etc. Without proper set up I just don't think he works isolated and without a good introduction movie.
So I'm not saying you can't do background in a film, but in an intended "Stand alone" film, if you follow the Gambit story, it's going to seem really cheesy and terrible. It's going to come off again like a patchwork for these movies rather than a unified whole.

And they'll massacre the accent.

1) Gambit can carry a movie. It depends on the story. Paste Pot Pete could carry his own movie if it was written well enough.
2) They'd be better served to go with a very slight southern accent than trying to go with a thick cajun (or New Orleans) accent.
3) I'd love a superhero movie where the first half wasn't all about the origins of the character. Just put him in a story, explain his powers, and go with it.

I think i've hit my saturation point. I have no interest in batman vs superman (seriously i almost feel like this movie is a joke and its not really happening). I dont think i'll catch this one either, certainly not in the theater. Had no interest in the captain americas. Surely its gotta be getting close for the rest of america as well regarding their saturation point.
I agree with you, but it is not a popular opinion on this board or with most of america.

If they go full scale comic, they need to speak with "chere" and the such.
cant go half and half, either full accent or just a slight southern.

As long as you've hit your saturation point with:
Movies about Cops
Movies about FBI/CIA/British Intelligence agents
Movies about War
Movies about Falling in Love
Movies about Vampires/Werewolves/The Occult
Movies about Aliens/Space Travel
Movies about Anthropomorphic Animals
Movies about Serial Killers/Monsters/Psychopaths
Movies about Kids Toys or Kids Cartoons
Movies about Historical events
It's not that it isn't popular, it's that there are a few dozen common strands of movies that are pretty worn out that have never gone away. Ever. And probably won't. Holding it against comic book movies alone is a little bit unfair.

Apparently he will be introduced in the X-men: Apocalypse film

Yeah this would be better. Would be more interesting if they made him a horseman.

They should have gotten the guy who plays Jaqen H'gar from Game of Thrones... He could have definitely pulled it off

This, I just can't see how this will be anything but a disaster.

the 2nd is good
but i already hit a saturation point and don't really go see many of these movies anymore
like, i didn't see either of the new spider man movies or the last 2 iron mans...or any of the wolverine movies
i don't plan on seeing batman v. superman and don't have any interest in the new x-men
i DO want to watch the guardians of the galaxy movie, though. Captain America was good, b/c it stands alone as an action/spy movie

I think Channing would be good as Gambit. Doesn't he spend a good bit of time in Nola? I hope they don't try to do an accent, I'd rather they just not butcher it than attempt it at all.

I'd give him a shot to practice with it, but if it just isn't working then don't turn him into Tom Hardy from Lawless.
