How much money can be saved by making your own toiletries?

Stuff like toothpaste and deodorant can easily be made in bulk...soap shampoo the same. Has anyone ever looked into how much a family of 4 could save by making their own? I'm guessing millions over a 25 year period

Not only would you save money on the toiletries, you'd also save money from all the dates you wouldn't be going on.

I wipe my arse with old newspapers. Save like 20 bucks a year.
That can feed a family of 4 at Burger King for one night

the same could be said about pretty much everything

Why would you go through the trouble to do this?
My time is worth money. I'm not a hippie. I'm not weird. I buy my toiletries like a normal person.

Specialization brah, leave the soap making to the soap makers. Your time is worth more working your actual job than what you'd save by making soap.

You are retarded if you really believe that!

If a family of four is living off of $100,000 after taxes then in 25 years they would make 2.5 million total. In order to save millions they would have to be already spending well over 80‰ of their annual income on toiletries alone.
So no. They wouldn't save millions. If they really tried they might save a couple thousand. But hundreds is more likely. And that's a pure monetary assessment without factoring opportunity costs, etc...

Assuming this is serious, just do the coupon thing. My aunt has so many shampoo bottles, toothpaste, etc a legit entire room of them. And they aren't well off.

To say a family would save millions is absolutely ridiculous. Being very generous here...the average college educated couple brings in 6 million in a lifetime. Less than 1/2 percent would go towards soap or shampoo.

Anyone have a recipe for Renu?

Just to save to save 2 million you would have to currently be spending $80,000 a year on toiletries.

I didn't realize this was a thread
I'm pretty high maintenance and I don't spend more than a hundred dollars a month on hygiene products

I would say if you want to save money, get rid of all of the unnecessary telecom (i.e. cell phones, cable tv, internet, etc.)...that would save some bucks...
I'll keep buying soap, though...

I would think the trade off between time spent and money saved would have a poor ROI. Dependent, of course, on how much you value your time. You'd do better doing that extreme couponing. Cleaner, quicker, and saves you money on more than just toiletries.

A couple bucks here and there
Sounds totally worth the trouble

Just take toilet paper rolls home from work and or public restrooms.

Borax and baking soda laundry detergent. Mix it myself. Saves tons, no dyes and does not wear out the clothing like other detergent
