Just with these numbers you'll pay off your $5,000 out of pocket within 50 months, plus or minus a few months.
Sounds about right. What a terrible idea

Now, when you take into count that energy fuel prices rise 3-4% per year, I'll be paying and additional $1,000.00 in 6 years for my current energy consumption, without solar panels.
Are you saying this in favor or against solar? To me, this makes the decision that much easier. The $100/month those panels saves you today will save you $200/month in 10 years or so when you look at inflation.
Also, you can get bigger than a $25k system. It's just that LA caps the state tax incentives at $25k if I'm not mistaken. The Federal 30% credit goes for however much the system costs. SO you could completely wipe away your bill if you wanted. The ROI would take longer w/o the state tax on the amount over $25k, but as you have illustrated with inflation, you're saving yourself a lot more money as time goes by.
It's why I can't believe everyone that owns a home in LA didn't run out to buy solar panels. Last year 80% of the cost of the system was covered. This year, it's 68%. I wouldn't wait any longer.
Here in Hawaii, they are going to be lowering the state pretty soon. But our rates avg $0.37 or so per kWh and so it's the biggest no-brainer possible here. Lots of sun, high electric rates, and great tax incentives right now.

See this document for inputing your own variables. I've highlighted the cells that require your unique input and everything else should work itself out.
Basically, Find your total KWH used per year, input it. Add up all your Electricity bills for that year, input the sum. I give the option to change the Fuel Inflation rate (i find it to be around 10% per year). Next, go to the website that is list to see what your average amount of sun hours per day is (It is 4.5 in Louisiana), and then input the size of the solar panel system you are looking into.
"No Solar Panel System" column shows the amount of money you would spend in a year if you had no solar panel system.
"Solar Panel System Production" shows you how much money you would save per year by using the solar panel system that you inputted.
"New Elec. Cost" column is the difference of the previous columns, showing how much you would still spend on Electricity with the solar panel system.

Got my first bill with solar panels on. $98 compared to $202 this month last year. Also this bill only had solar on for 24 days.

Thats awesome. Id love to see what your bills look like for the summer.

I have 'em. My electric bill dropped an average of $80/mo. Plus, with the backup generator feature I have never had a power outage. Had them for three years. In two years I recoup my investment then it's all pure savings.

How much extra is insurance each year for the solar system?

congratulations. i've got the perfect setup for panels on metal roof installation. probably going to do it in next 2 years if all the incentives stay in place. I don't use much electricity by myself.

I got my best electric bill yet. $11.22 and that's actually all fees from Cleco. I took in more kWh this month than I used so a credit will roll over to next month.

If you get local/state incentives, I don't know why you wouldn't go solar. Sadly, I live in Texas.....we like our energy injected, smoking and on fire. Solar is for dem liberal hippies in Austin and california....and guvment handouts are for corporations that contribute to our leaders campaign funds.

I dont understand why people were laughing at others getting them when the average ownership is 12 years....as if reduced energy bills and already installed solar panels wouldn't add value to your house

No battery backup. I'm pretty sure that is hella expensive.
Posted on 11/24/14 at 4:54 am to LSUWhoDat
Negative, especially after you factor in the savings of not having an electric bill as opposed to lowering your electric bill.
Posted on 11/24/14 at 6:54 am to Placebeaux
But the batteries don't last nearly as long as the panels. You are replacing every 4-5 years from what I researched a few years back.

Wow that's awesome, you're really lowering your carbon footprint! I've been "green" for a while now, you should also try composting and saving your rain in barrels to run in your shower, drink, etc. I also craft christmas presents out of the pine cones in my yard and people love it!

Every person that posted about "paying off" the system in about 4 years. Do you realize that taxpayers are paying off the difference? Why am I paying for you to get solar panels and for you to save money. This is my first post in this thread but my opinion is solar panels shouldn't subsidized by my labor / taxes. I don't care if you put elephants on your roof but why should I have to pay for something you want? Everything (tax credits in this case) that gov't gives to one person was taken from someone else. If solar is such a great thing all I am saying is that it should work without credits.

It might, but it will also void your homeowners insurance with the quickness.

Congrats on the $23 dollars you will save next month.
Who cares?
I don't know about Louisiana, but in SC, our power company is horrible and crooked. I'd install solar just out of spite to the power company.
