You must live in a commie state. In Texas, we pay a sir tax for solar. We have to call Rick Perry sir before he sticks it in our arse.

Sorry if already answered...what happens if you need to replace the roof and you have a solar system installed ?

I want to see some real world long term data. What happens of hail breaks them? How often do they need to be cleaned? These things determine long term viability for the middle class Joe.

Hail won't break then. You don't clean them. Rain washes the dirt off

People who say you don't save money are full of shite.
Minimum charge from Entergy is $12.
$12 bills are so nice...

Have fun with that tax break, assuming you don't let the contractor take it.

That's impressive, Napoleon !

Thanks OP and Napoleon for all of the useful info. Although, I haven't checked yet to see how Cleco will try to rape me if I do install panels
I'm clearing two acres near Slidell to build a new home. My youngest is 2.5 yo and I plan to stay in this home until she's in college.
Additionally, a panel distribution company in Harahan I do work for sometimes told me that one of their customers is a licensed company on the north shore that only uses the tax credit money to pay themselves. Next time I go there I'll find out the company name to see if anyone has heard of them

My utility bill for a 3200 sq ft house during that same month was $72. Which is only a $60 savings. If you paid the $5000 most people do as your part of the installation, then it will take 7 years for you to just break even (unless you financed, which will take even longer).
The average length of home ownership in La is 12 years, which means your total savings over mine is only $3600, or $25 a month. And if you have one instance of hail, hurricane damage, a transmission tax, or just need a new roof then you can kiss your entire savings goodbye

Even if you get every fastener into a rafter, the constant heating and cooling of the fasteners will lead to expansion. Expansion and contraction of the fastener, coupled with wind-load (pulling and pushing) on the panel will lead to movement. Thus, leaks.
My neighbor is currently trying to find someone to sue over the water damage caused by leaks created by a solar panel installation, it was done several years ago and the business that did the install is long gone. Seems to be a lot of roof problems occurring now that these installations have some years on them.

Not if you go with a company that knows wtf they are doing.
Standing Seam is the easiest and there are no penetrations. But for wood shake, asphalt and aluminum shingles you would use what's called Quick Mount, a counter flashing. This is what it looks like
Up close
That "block" keeps the lag bolt, which is "hurricane rated" stainless steel btw, above the roof penetration. Water cannot possibly get into the lag. Again though, use a company that knows what they are doing.

And just to add, there are a whole bunch of dumb fricks in this thread. If you're going to shite on something, at least have some semblance of knowledge about the subject (not directed at you Vette).
OP - good job on saving your family money
ETA: For the guys who think it looks "terrible", here's a few pics for you
Asphalt
Can even do Monier
Standing Seam
On an asphalt garage
So "terrible"
You geniuses keep paying full price to the electric companies, meanwhile there's actually a lot of smart people who are paying $100 less a month (more in other states) and taking advantage of the highest tax credits you'll ever see and they won't be around long.
