Am I a racist to think that Sterling's comments weren't that bad?

Especially not to the extent of the NBA, commissioner's response as well as rapid advertiser dropping.
Was it okay?
Nah, but it was mild enough considering he was up for an NAACP lifetime achievement award to wonder if maybe there was some other meaning to it that was badly phrased in private conversation.
I swear, the outroar from fans, players, and officials is like he was recorded referring to his own team players as "fricking illiterate n*****s."

I was up for one next Monday, but I was just informed that posting this thread made them change their mind.

No. I don't think they are that bad.
I'm actually impressed with America if this is one of the worst racism cases we could find today.

I am of the mindset that I don't care what people say (esp in private). I am not going to get the reds over another person's opinion.
Anyone who really does get upset over these things is weak minded.
I'm concerned about what people DO if anything.

You are a racist for just saying this. Lifetime ban from tigerdroppings!
You are banned from lurking!

Yes, if you don't find what he said to be despicable and can't see how incredibly racist they were and understand why the nba would ban him for life. Then yes, you are definitely a racist

I'm black and I don't think they were that bad when I heard the recordings.

Seriously, can't you see that in this nation at this time there are certain things you can't ever say, and can't even think, without the risk of some incredible backlash? Is the man an idiot? Of course. He showed himself to be a fool. But watching the response is scary. Who will the next person to say something contrary to the political correct way of thought and have to face the inquisition?

I was thinking about this on my way to work this morning. I mean there are convicted rapists playing in most leagues. This really feels overboard considering it was a private conversation between an 80 year old and his side piece. Hell I'm really surprised there isn't more outrage that he has side piece while married. A side piece that is so well known he has to ask her not to post pictures of other men she is with on instagram! I think this was way overboard taken in isolation but the problem was his history. And I honestly don't think he is just a racist, I think he is an elitist. I think he holds himself to be better than anyone else. I bet he hates a lot of groups out there as a whole. I do think we will see a lot of continued hypocrisy as these types of conversations come out more.
As I mentioned in another thread, one thing that has occurred throughout history and for all ethnic groups is that families had an expectation that you will marry someone from within the same ethnic group: Italian marry Italian, black marry black, Korean marry Korean... I think daughters will start videoing their "racist" fathers. And maybe it's not really that true. I didn't have any sisters and my 2-year old daughter is the first daughter in my family in 2 generations so I'm only basing that on what I hear from others. And my daughter won't be dating until she's 25 so it won't really be an issue for a while...

No but it's an easy target for people to get offended about and some folks just love drama

Not really... I don't agree with his comments and believe he is indeed a closet racist. He was a dumbass to say them and should have known he was being set up.
He has the right to say whatever he feels, just as the sponsors and others have the right to react however they see fit.
Having said that, this is a very slippery slope. If the NBA is going to punish him, instead of letting the free market play out (sponsors pull and him be forced to sell the team on his own), will the NBA punish ALL of the players who make racist/sexist/homophobic comments?

It wasn't bad but in today's age political correctness is entrenched in our society and the media loves to keep racism alive so they can use it to beat their opponents(white male conservatives) over the head. The media loves racism also so they can wring their hands and use the incident as a way to jump out, attract attention to themselves and say "See? We are NOT racist! We are better people because of this!"
The media and liberals are obsessed with race. The old racists are rapidly fading and the libs are getting more and more desperate to find cases of racism they can exploit and generate outrage over. In their desperation, expect to see their false accusations and blanket statements to increase. They are ready to panic.

I think they were bad, but the response is insane. I just heard on the news that he's been proven "guilty" of making racist comments to his girlfriend. It's crazy to fine someone millions of dollars and take their property and their job because of comments they made to their girlfriend in private.
As others have said, there are plenty of prominent figures in sports and entertainment who have said and done far worse things without this kind of total societal campaign against them.

quote:Honestly, I think the commissioner's response was what he had to do. He is running an organization that directly relies upon advertiser dollars and a fan base that was NOT going to be favorable to this. He's not making decision for HIMSELF, he's making them for the league.
commissioner's response
Bottom line. The man's major error was in his relationship stupidity and it's going to cost him. On that point, he's far from alone. This is more of a story about what can happen when you think too damned much with your little head.
And yes, I know others have said things that can be considered worse. And, on that point, I will just say what I've said to my oldest and anyone else who will listen. "Life isn't fair......it's not even INTENDED to be fair".

Man's got the right to free speech. He didn't even use the n-word. He wasn't barring the door - he just didn't want the GF to bring AA folks to the games. It's ignorant and small-minded, but IMHO it did not warrant wall-to-wall media coverage, 7-figure fine and lifetime banishment.

Sterling sucks...but with little to lose, he ought to do what some group did in the last election...put out a big time $$$$$$$ bounty for any recordings/material of the high-minded (and monetarily motivated) Girlfriend and boyfriend Magic Johnson et al on a racist rant. Larry Flynt pulled this on Conservatives too, back when. Got a couple, I think. Not hard.
The real danger here is the CENSORIAL power exercised by Authoritarian Ideologues who hold Whites to one standard...and Blacks...to virtually no standard. Think the racist Sharpton...holding his own tv show. And Obama's "spiritual mentor", Wright. Not that race is a pivotal issue, but it sets a axiomatic precedent re the First Amendment.
I suspect that YouTube will spill over with this kind of stuff in the future...if they don't put that gal in jail.
Whatever. It'll all come out in the wash. Mother Nature steps in when the wisdom of humanity fails.
