'm not trying to take the racist element out of what he said, but I think this hits it on the head. To him, these NBA players are his underlings that he throws money at to entertain his audience. They all have money, but to him, they are still street trash. There was definitely racism in the way that he told her, but I don't think that he just didn't want her to be with them because they were black, it's because he didn't want her associating with that element in general.

Huh? What element? He didn't say anything about NBA players, just blacks. And I wouldn't consider Magic "street trash."

Yep, only on the poliboard will people believe "its not that bad" to think being seen in public with black people is an embarrassment.

YEah, if that would have been all he stated, then yeah. Maybe so. But it's not.

I think a lot of this is horseshite and I think people condemning sterling for his comments to his gf alone, are indirectly indicating they support extortion, blackmail, and do not support expectations of privacy.

The thing that drives me nuts are the talking heads condemning sterling all have said shite in private if recorded they would be facing the same type of heat.

Yep they act like what he said was horrifying. Bunch of hypocrites. I've said worse and I'd put my morals up against most of these media types/politicians. Almost none of them really care about racism. Their agenda is sensationalism.

In and of themselves they werent awful, though still cringe worthy. However, combined with all his numerous past comments about minorities being ugly, smelly, lazy, etc. yeah they were bad.

Before we carry this "everybody does it" rip one step farther, I'd like to throw in that I've never said anything comparable to what Sterling said on the matter of race--never. I'm 31. Never. I've said some pretty sexist shite that I wouldn't be proud to repeat (mostly in jest), but that's about it (mainly about female driving, inability to present a cogent argument and stay on topic, melting down under stress, etc.)

So...what all do you say in familiar company? Again, you guys in one breath will claim that racism is all but dead, and then play the whole "everybody says "x" behind closed doors" card in the next.

Sincere question.

I don't judge or treat individuals based on immutable characteristics outside that person's control (i.e. race). However, I do make sociological/cultural observations, particularly if they are predominant and negative, even with my friends who happen to be African American - that's one positive thing I've taken from Holder's "cowards on race" argument.

It is "all but dead" - "racism" is institutionalized preference (or bar) - and to find places where blacks are not allowed to go is virtually impossible. To find jobs blacks are not allowed to have (POTUS, for goodness sake) - is virtually impossible.

Any African American, who is otherwise qualified for a job, academic opportunity, etc., is not only welcomed, but actively recruited in accordance with many institutions' diversity policies and goals. While there remains some residual bigotry, 95%+ of the barriers that existed prior to 1964 are gone - and the other ~5% are on the endangered species list.

No, you're not. In the grand scheme of things, he just pretty much showed he doesn't like her flaunting her other partners publicly.

Some people will always find a reason to complain while supporting groups who are exclusive to race. Pot calling the kettle black per se.

If this were an isolated incident, or if it had occurred in a vacuum, this would not be that bad; an old guy doesn't want his half-black girlfriend being seen posing with African-Americans... because he was trying to pass her off as a white or latina girl...

Actually, any way you slice it - especially when you consider that one of the black men in question was the venerated Magic Johnson - those comments were pretty bad.

Those comments alone were embarrassing and likely to cause a blowback. IF this were an isolated incident, the reaction would be strong, but not as overwhelming as the reaction we've seen.

Lest anyone forget the homeless center, Elgin Baylor, the apartment 'housing' requirements in LA, etc, this is not an isolated incident.

The reaction from many is immature - welcome to the Twitterverse or whatever - but in this case, the NBA was right to cut this man off. He has been a POS for a very long time.

tl;dr? These comments aren't terrible, but the dude who said them has a long history of being a racist POS, so he gets nailed for them.

sorta icing on the cake. i don't think this alone would have gotten him in all this trouble, but it is coupled with his past

Pretty much nailed it.

This was the culmination of decades worth of overt racism from Sterling.

And I don't disagree with this analysis - but when a relatively innocent guy says something similar in the future - is this going to be the precedent used? That's my only concern - not any sort of concern for billionaire bigot Sterling...
