I bought new vehicles in the past with no money in my pocket. Literally a letter that says "I will pay you. I make this much money."
Which isn't necessarily the best idea when you don't have money.

Congrats on living within your means, seriously. I'd look for a rav4, crv, pilot, 4runner etc. 8k will buy you plenty of vehicle, despite what the OT wants you to believe, lol.
I think you could get a solid mid 2000's Grand Cherokee for that price

What am I looking at here?
You're looking at 150k-200k miles for full size SUVs. You should focus your search more towards the crossover models. Just be sure to keep your expectations realistic as far as expecting a ton of miles on an older model.

Last year I stumbled on a 2001 Sequoia with only 70,000 miles for $10k. Bought it the next day, but I doubt there are many deals like that around.

A used 4-runner might be your best option. Will have high miles for that price. But so will anything else, and toyotas will last longer and not guzzle as much gas.

Depends. I had no money in 2008 but needed a vehicle to go to work. I pretty much got fricked in that deal but they gave me a new Tundra. Along with a 8% interest rate.

As a 2005 Pilot owner with 193000 miles on it, I highly recommend the 2004 with only 130. The only caveat is the 2004-2006 models had some serious transmission issues. Most likely if it's at 130k it's already been addressed, but i'd inquire into repair history before plunking down the cash.

Man I got a buddy selling a a z71 Tahoe either 04 or 05 for 8k. Can't remember the mileage but I remember it's not outrageous. He may be willing to negotiate on his price too...

Mines well put $8k down on a 2013 model that's around the $17k-$20k range w/ low miles. Hit AutoTrader, could find a decent ride on there and come out with like a $200-$250/mo. note. Buy a ride for the long haul bruh, you buy a car w/high mileage you gonna be repeating this same cycle in a couple years.

Wife wants an SUV. We are poor. Don't want to take on any payments or debt.
What am I looking at here? Ford dealership just laughed at me.
If you can come up with another $14K, I will sell you my 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, 2DR, 6 speed manual - soft top, upgraded tires with only 17,800 miles.

2002 Nissan Xterra
A couple just out of your range, but maybe negotiable:

Get a used 4Runner...have a mechanic inspect it thoroughly.

I bought a 2005 Rav4 last year for $9k. 111k miles. Great, reliable vehicle and it looks new. Bought it from an older guy that took great care of it.

I got a 2004 Toyota Highlander Limited, with all the upgrades that I am going to sell since I just got a pickup. Let me know if you are interested.

If you have $8k to put down, then why dont you try to finance $5k or so. A $13k vehicle will be much mnore trustworthy that an $8k klunker. Even if your credit is shite, they will work with you bc of your down payment. This is a good way to build some credit too.

Keep the 8K in your bank acct for emergencies. Finance the SUV (a cheap one). Rates are really low right now.

This sounds like an excellent Top Gear challenge.

Try ebay or autotrader to get an idea of your options.
This.
Autotrader is pretty good -- I just got done vehicle shopping and perused it almost daily. I ended up buying from a local dealer, but came pretty close on a few occasions to making a deal on there.
