goes much deeper than the classes you're involved in though, much of campus life will expose you to a variety of thought. Clubs, friends, campaigns, etc.

You aren't gonna escape a more progressive minded college atmosphere though wherever you go. Most higher learning institutions are gonna produce a higher percentage of "progressive-minded" people compared to those that don't go to college. It's just a result of being exposed to so many different people and viewpoints for 4 years.

As someone else already mentioned, even a more conservative school like LSU is way more progressive than the rest of Louisiana as a whole.

If you want her to have opportunities you never did, wouldn't that possibly include being introduced to those who may have opinions that differ from your own? And for frick's sake, teach her to think for herself and make her own decisions and not take ANYONE'S opinion as anything other than opinion. Including your own.

I know, right?

This thread is blowing my mind.

My buddy is getting his PhD there and fricking hates it. He's a good ole boy from Georgia that hates all the rich liberals in undergrad there.

You should be encouraging your daughter to choose whatever school SHE wants to go to and support whatever decision she makes. If you have financial constraints then discuss them with her so she is making her decision with all the information. Her mom not wanting to cut the apron strings is really not a valid reason to deny her going to a school she wants to go to.

To be fair. Most of us are saying, "yeah, send her".

That said. If I were the student in question and I was strong enough to go to Princeton for pre-med, I probably would consider another top school for that field where perhaps it wasn't so lefty. But, that's me. I wouldn't impose that upon my kid. I suppose if she asked my opinion, I'd repeat the above but that's about it.

exactly, so why not pay 7k per year at one of the best universities in the world? you'd have a hard time getting out of delgado for 7k a year.

this is the god dammed no brainer of all no brainers.

If you can afford to send your daughter to Princeton to study a real degree (not some BS liberal arts, but a degree that offers great career prospects like engineering, accounting, finance, or the pure sciences) I wouldn't hesitate.

Don't go to Princeton to study accounting or Finance (if they even offer it, which I suspect they don't) You can get that anywhere. You go to an Ivy school to prepare to make a difference in the world. Don't waste the opportunity on a trade school degree (which is what it is, and I say that as one who majored in Finance.)

To the OP, you say with financial aid, it would be cheaper to go to Princeton than Rhodes? Why is there even a question, in that case?

By the way, Princeton traditionally has traditionally been the "southern" Ivy League school, and has a lot of southerners to this day, so she wouldn't be alone.

No.

It is an absolutely beautiful area, and I absolutely "lol" at the idea of Princeton as a bastion of liberalism.

Good luck finding a higher concentration of wealth anywhere outside of Manhattan.

well, not quite. You have to put some boundaries around your kid's choice if you're paying for it.

that's why I added that little part in there about discussing financial issues and making decisions with all the information available.

The secret is the prestige of graduate school and not undergraduate. No one in the long run will give a shite about someone's school for undergraduate.

If it is affordable I guess, but I would go somewhere that gives her the best connections and will allow her to truly stand out.

most med schools have prerequisite classes and the MCAT is biology. Normally it just makes sense to be a chemistry/biology/biochem major because the over lap is so great.

Also all Medical schools look at your maths and sciences GPA. you can't hide being weak at science.

So you don't want your daughter to go to a prestigious, top-5 university because of your political views? You don't think thats kind of selfish?

not true typically, those who are top of their class at lesser college do more with their life than middle-tier ivy students where you graduate means more, on the whole

I remember as an undergrad, my advisor showed me a chart that stratified students accepted into medical school based on gpa, MCAT, etc and the ranking of their undergrad. The name of your degree matters tremendously if his daughter is premed. Basically, if you go to an Ivy or similar elite school, you can have a lower MCAT and gpa and still get accepted when compared to a student at an LSU type school.
