Is golf a sport that you have to play to enjoy watching?

I don't play and don't enjoy golf on TV

Playing helps you appreciate what you're seeing on tv.

No.
I hate playing and love watching it on TV.
Your argument is invalid.

The more I play and better I've gotten, the more I enjoy watching it on tv. So I will say yes.

It's okay for me. Don't follow it super closely, but I'll watch every so often

I enjoy playing it but hate watching other people play it (in person or on TV).

I think baseball fits your title better. I find very few people who did not play at least youth baseball and yet love watching baseball on TV.
I like watching golf on TV but I prefer playing because all kinds of weird stuff happens with us hackers. Like yesterday. I teed my ball up and told my partner "I'm hitting to the sun so watch my ball if I lose sight."
Him: "OK"
I swung and saw the ball in a blur go straight for the center of the fairway but I lost sight in the sun almost immediately.
Me: "I lost it. Did you see it."
Him: (Laughing...yeah, I saw it."
Me: "Well, where did it go?"
Him: (still laughing) "It's right next to your foot."
I had teed the ball up to high and hit the tee out from under the ball into the sun. The ball didn't go anywhere.
You just don't see that on the PGA tour.

I'm terrible at golf and I think that makes it more enjoyable to watch because it's hard as frick to be that good

You have to play on a regular basis to appreciate how good these guys are to really enjoy watching it. Lots of guys can shoot 64 on their home course when playing with a few buddies. These guys can do it anywhere, when the pressure is on and everyone is staring them down. That's what sets them apart.

I think so.
There are some many thing you won't appreciate how amazing they are unless you have tried to do them and completely failed.
I like golf, because it is something i think anyone can do. Most just suck, but these guys are the somehow amazing at it.

I really enjoy watching golf on TV if it is a course I have played. As stated by others, you can appreciate how good the pros are if you've played.

I play tennis, another highly skilled technical sport, so I have the utmost respect for golfers and what they can do with a little white ball. Truly incredible.

No.
I rarely play golf and I suck at it. But I love watching it. Watching great golf amazes me more so than watching great football or basketball.
Golf is such a hard sport to be truly great at. I watch in awe at some / most of the shots that the players hit on tour. Its ridiculous.

I'm a pretty big golf fan, but I don't religiously watch the Zurich or anything. I'll catch some of the medium tournaments and plan weeks around the majors, the players, etc.

I'd assume it'd help. I hate everything about the actual experience(I'd rather spend my time surfing/running/swimming/ but don't mind watching on TV.

No. But it helps.
And hurts. When you hear the clubs they pull for the given yardages it pisses me off
If you watch in person I think playing is more essential. First pro I ever saw hit a ball was Billy Mayfair. Pudgy little dude recovering from recent chemo. He blasted the ball. Watching them all hit driver with the same equipment I use and achieve a ball trajectory I cannot fathom is always amazing. I then saw Couples and Daly hit later which was ridiculous.
