How is State Street so sketchy?

Can someone explain to me how there are what appear to be actual crack dens a full block from LSU's campus? I don't understand how, with major college attractions abounding in the area, how here are somehow roving bands of drug addicts and beggars permitted to just hang around? Someone needs to clean this shite up, its disgusting.
Maybe I'm exaggerating but this morning walking to class (at 8 am I might add), I spotted a guy (who I usually see around in his wheelchair drinking a tall boy) rolling around in someone's front yard like he was on PCP. Not to mention there are not infrequent muggings, robberies, etc in that vicinity.
rant over..not really a rant though..I kind of find it amusing

all these new apartment complexes and all are giving students other options, landlords are going section 8 with the old ones and making bank
pretty soon the whole area between Tiger Land and Burbank will loook the same

What's crazy to me is, given the location, there is NO WAY that should be the best economic use of those properties. No way.

Nothing makes you feel more alive like seeing a crack addict downing PBR tall boys at 9 am on a Sunday while LSU students make their way to church

A poor college kid could get 3 for $5 there at one time. fricking inflation.

landlords don't care as long as the units are rented, and the shitty ones are cheap. Slowly but surely, they are being bought and renovated. There is definitely an initiative by the Northgate Merchants Assoc to revitalize that area as less sketchy.
I would love to get rid of all the pan handling bums out there. Between the local bums and the transplant nomad gutter punks, it's annoying. i can't even walk to the Chimes without being asked for money by the exact same fricking people every day.

I had good times living on state street, glad to see it hasn't changed.

Somebody needs to clean that place up

Pretty much everything from Spanish Moon until State Street looks like arse.

Those same landlords are just as sketchy as their tenants, so the cycle of state street continues.

Landlords don't give a frick. I live on State for a few years. Used to be worse, but they've torn down a few of the older crack houses. After Katrina is was Krusty central. I enjoyed my couple of years there, outside of the great Krusty migration of 2005.

slowly but surely development is taking over. There is the new apts on W. McKinley or whatever. River District will break ground soon. More and more lots and pieces connecting Nicholson and Highland will be bought and renovated.
