I have to agree with Boats, 50 is too light, but damn I can sling a spoon a mile and sometimes that's what it takes. But in the tourney the other day I spent a lot of time pulling knots out. 65 is money for me, tangles are almost nonexistent. I fish with both spinning and bait casters. I catch my perches on spinning with 4# mono.

I use bait casters for my catfish gear and most of my bass stuff but if you are using a shakey head or fishing a spook I really like a spinning rod. I also use spinning gear drifting for catfish.

I don't want to start a new thread, so I'm going to slightly hijack this one.

I haven't ever kayak fished, but I'm about to start in the next few weeks. Baitcasters are all that I have used since I was 14 (besides inshore fishing with a guide). I have 5 baitcasters that cover all of my needs and no spinning reels besides ultra-lights. I've never thrown a baitcaster while sitting so close to the water. Do I need to thing about getting a spinning reel because my range of motion will be limited? What sort of rod/reel rigs do you kayak guys use?

You will be fine using a baitcaster sitting down in a kayak. I dont have any problems at all with it. Just remember there are other rods standing up behind your head , I mainly cast side-arm out of mine.

I use both with no problems. From ultra lights to 7.5' rods with bait casters.

drop it

Besides for white perch fishing drop shotting is the only reason I use spinning reels. I can throw light weightless stuff, shakey heads and everything else on a baitcaster, but if you're drop shotting it's a slow painful process letting your bait free fall in a baitcaster each time.

The spinning rod is the more versatile rod for salt. No reason you need baitcast unless you're spot casting into mangroves/marsh. Do you fish?

I truly hate throwing a popping cork on a baitcaster.
