Also impossible considering the property owners along Highland have a lot more money and sway than the property owners along Staring.

Totally, but it's short sided not to see how much it would make life easier not having to wait 10 minutes for some trying to turn on sunset. Plus a good trail could inprove property value.

This is going to be a disaster. There are simply too many side streets and businesses to make this turn lane work.

It's my hope that this will drive out all of the cut through traffic trying to avoid Florida Blvd as long as possible heading to LP and people trying to take Government to Jefferson and then to Airline heading towards Ascension. Those people chose to move out and need to pay their penance on the interstate.

No it won't. If anything it will get rid of the people cutting through to avoid the interstate and make it more of a neighborhood avenue like Pyrtania.

How many people not from the area actually visit those businesses?

This is the point. Government should be a destination street, not a thru-way.

back to topic, I have a question regarding Government Street.

Has this change been done elsewhere, and if so were the results as promised?

I know of lots of 2 lanes made into 3 and 4s to 5, but I don't know of any 4s made 3.

It has been done many other places, but I don't think it has been done in BR yet. It is a common design solution called a "roadway diet."

i was wondering this too. it's a bold move, and they know the public's knee-jerk reactions are always going to be negative when you see 4 lanes going to 3...or anything remotely different than what's there. i'm sure extensive traffic modeling was done, analyzed, checked, reanalyzed, and double checked before making this kind of decision. i'd like to see/hear a summary of the models and how much better they think it will flow.

Probably a good many that are passing through on their way home from work.

Plus what about the bottlenecks at the interstate and at lobdell?

What do bottlenecks in west Baton Rouge have to do with government street traffic?

DOTD is getting retarded with the roundabouts. There are some places where they make sense, but they're getting ridiculous now. They proposed "fixing" Hwy 30 in Gonzales by adding 3 roundabouts in a row at Tanger Outlet Mall, Cabella's, and I-10. Yeah, let's take the only stretch of road in Louisiana that has almost as many 18-wheelers on it as the interstate and put in traffic circles for almost the same cost as 4 laneing the whole stretch. Yeah, that sounds logical.

You obviously didn't read the link and you have no idea what you're talking about.

outside of sonic and jackbox, very few outsiders go into those places. Been living there for years and all I really see are locals. People frequent the places they live. Passers through aren't using those grocery stores and restaurants.

And there won't be bottlenecks when people stop using the street to avoid Florida.

Those people will probably move to North street

It'll get interesting when people coming from both directions are trying to use the same part of the turn lane.

Was thinking the exact same thing. This is where driving IQ comes into play. Baton Rouge drivers have ZERO. This should be fun to watch.

I think he meant at the two ends of Government where the 3 lane section starts. From downtown to I-110 would still be 4 lanes, but doesn't Government start at Lobdell, near Independence Park? So that wouldn't be an issue.

I disagree. If someone is driving from downtown east to wherever they live, they will stop at CVS, Walgreens, Calandro's, Cane's, Albertsons, Popeyes, etc. It's easier to hit all these stops on gov't because Florida doesn't have the selection.

ETA: and North certainly doesn't.

There aren't many on the state system. Most are local government.
