I want to get a beagle. What are the pros and cons? Will a beagle dig up my yard like a weiner dog? Where can i find a good breed of beagle?

Thanks

My wife and I had one and I'll never get another, though some of her problems aren't typical of the breed. She bit (even us), howled, barked all the time, didn't like anyone, wouldn't take commands, would follow a scent to the end of the earth, had hip dysplasia in both hips, and was generally unfriendly. She could be sweet at times, but then she'd turn on you in and instant, and I had to put her down after she lunged at our son when he was a baby.

Our next door neighbors have a beagle they keep outside and that stupid thing won't stop barking, and it always keeps our guests up at night when people come to stay with us.

Unless you're needing a beagle for a specific reason, I'd get a lab.

My buddy has twentysomething beagles, a mountain cur, a blackmouth, and a cajun squirrel dog all outside in pens. THE NOISE!! I am sure the neighbors hate his arse even though he lives in BFE.

If he is reading this... you know I am right!!

Looks like Beagle is out the mix because of the howling too much responses. What dog does the OB recommend? I am getting it mostly for my 3 year old daughter. I figure a lab is too big for my backyard. Any suggestions? It will be an outside dog.

Coot, I think he would learn that he cant bark when that collar is on him.

I have two Bluetick Beagles. The male (Jax) is just now started running in the rabbit pen. Been three times and getting better each time. Sky is already running on her own.

Blue Bayou Jax @ 6 Weeks Old

Jax at 5 Months

Blue Bayou Sky at 6 Weeks

Sky at 5 Months

Cant wait for both of them to be running together.

my personal favorite family dog. Will get another one day.

LINK /

They do require exercise but are great with kids. Females are usually smaller. Mine weighed 50lbs

ETA: do some research on different breeds regarding what you expect out of them an what they need. I also have a yellow lab I love, just does not compare all around as the blackmouth I had.

Howling, running off, howling, digging, howling, etc., did I mention howling?

I had one as a teenager and the above statement is fact. Aggravating little dog.

Boykin spaniel. Check out my sig image below. Females top out at 35#, males at a little over 40#. Sweet dogs, good demeanor, smart and playful.

Mine stays outside all day but comes in at night. If you just want a good dog as a companion though, go pick one up from the pound. If you by a sporting or working dog and don't plan on hunting or working it, you're just asking for trouble.

I may try it out. I am sending him to the pen soon. He just turned 7 months. Took him hunting 4 or 5 times. I killed a rabbit in front of him that he jumped and he didnt even know it.

thats a pretty pup

OP, I love beagles, loved them growing up, its unfortunate the howling is a deal breaker.

All I can offer is don't get a corgi. Love ours, but the shedding is incredibly frustrating

A lot of people make the mistake of getting a dog that was bred to do a certain job. Then try to work against all its instincts to make it a quiet, friendly, obedient pet, even if that's not really traits that are bred into it.

Get a breed that is either bred as a pet, or at least one that's bred to do things that are conducive to petdom. Believe it or not, the doberman I have now is the best family dog I've ever had. Dobies are bred as guard dogs, but that makes them fiercely loyal to their family, and the smarts are bred in as well.

If you think about it, breeds that are meant to range far and wide, following a scent and howling, while not listening to a damn thing a human says to them, MAY not be the very best for a pet.

Ha. My coonhound is an inside dog and when she barks at something she sees outside it's so loud you can feel it in your chest. Many of times I fell asleep on the sofa and she howls and it scares the shite out of me. Wouldn't trade her for the world though. She's about 88 pounds right now, big bitch.

We have a beagle & a beagle/weiner dog mix inside dogs. Great with people & kids. They still go out & chase critters & I love the howl of the beagle when she's running

I have a beagle. She's a great dog, but doesn't howl. She does run off whenever she gets the chance though. Pretty sure pop got her in South Texas. Couldn't tell you where.
