I loved watching Ken Jennings go on his run.

I love watching Jeopardy in general.

Also for those saying he hasn't been close to losing, didn't he tie a game?

You're right, he did tie once. There were a couple of other games where the game was still in doubt in final Jeopardy. All of his games since the coming back from the tournament break have been blowouts.

Another part of his strategy is that in final Jeopardy close games, he plays for the tie.

Betting to beat someone buy $1 leaves you with the ability to win and/or lose, barring that your opponent gets it right and you get it wrong.

If you bet for the tie, you get the money, and get to come back the next day to keep playing

His Daily Double strategy is great. He keeps them away from the other players, and usually doesn't hurt himself. He is also very fast in moving on the board and it throws other players off.

Exactly, that's why he is fun to watch. Fast paced Jeopardy and it's a good change from the usual way the categories are gone through.

im sure i understand how thats any type of strategy when in the end all the questions save 1 or 2 get asked.

He hunts for the Daily Doubles, which are usually in the higher money clues. So by the time he's found both of them, most of the high-money clues are gone, and the other contestants don't have a daily double to make up ground on him.

exactly

if you firmly believe that you are the superior player and that the more level the playing field the more likely you are to win what you most want to do is prevent another player from taking a big gamble and hitting it to make up ground.

If however you are up against a player that is probably better than you the opposite strategy should apply. Start with the lower value clues, build up a small kitty by ringing in and getting right the easier questions. After obtaining some sort of pot you hope to get lucky by picking a daily double and doubling your money later in a round.

That's why I don't see why people don't like his strategy. It relies if anything more on the assumption you are the better player, he's just using the strategy outlined in that Jeopardy strategy book.
I've seen a bunch of people try it and fail because they miss questions or don't buzz first

He still has to answer the questions right. And, if other people buzz in faster with the right answers on all the other squares, then they'd beat him.
ken Jennings said this was a huge advantage for him. Timing the click is the most important part of the game, and once he got it down, he had a huge advantage over the other contestants.

JMO

I think a lot of people don't like it because they tend to root for the underdog. Either because they like underdogs or because they don't like a dominant champion who makes them feel dumb by comparison (and rationalize around that subconscious issue)

Maybe, I myself like Teen Jeopardy because I know a lot of the answers

It was THE reason he won

There are a shitload of trivia experts out there. The buzzer skill is what gave KJ his edge.

Like a boss! I can't remember the last time I watched Jeopardy, but this thread prompted me to watch it today. He had control of the game instantly.

Brad Rutter was better than Ken Jennings, and proved it at the ultimate tournament of champions when he beat Jennings.
Guy has never lost in 20 jeopardy matches. he played when you could only win 5 in a row then you were done.

Rutter smoked Jennings, but damn, it's still hard to imagine anyone surpassing Jennings' 74 wins in a row. And Mormon nerd that he is, Jennings gave the single funniest answer in the history of the game.
