I wonder if the current markets would be as successful minus this trade. Gretzky says he probably could have won 4 more cups with Edmonton. 8 cups? redonkulus.
If he and Messier both stayed in Edmonton they could have won a few more, not sure about 4 but 2 or 3 should have been in the realm of possible.

i would say Shaq to Miami and Big Unit to Houston... those were the most buzz i've seen around a trade in my lifetime
Shaq to Miami was just drama filled, not nearly as big as these other trades mentioned

That only won 2 cups.
How many did the Gretzky trade win?

Ruth to the Yankees............/thread...........
Gretzky was a better player in his sport than Ruth was in his.
But hockey is definitely a second-tier sport so it's hard to say if his trade was bigger in a larger context.

And watching the golf at Pebble Beach today, I suspect #99 is a better golfer than Ruth was.

Yea, they both still won a title. Not sure what point you're trying to make?
It was a big trade, but not on the level of a Ruth or Gretzky

Not as big but GAVE Kobe two more rings was the armed robbery the Lakers did to Memphis. Immediately changed who the top team in the West was.

No the Ruth trade was bigger.

I just watched the 30 for 30 "Kings Ransom" and that shite was insane.
I still think Wayne was a bit of a prima donna.
Montreal was the last Canadian team to win the cup beating th
Is hockey recognized as a sport. Kidding.

Ruth wasn't traded... He was sold... How about David Beckham to L A? that truly changed the mls and maybe the sport forever

Yes.
Because it probably ruined hockey.
Suddenly all warm weather places in the US got NHL franchises...Gretzky didn't just energize L.A. for Hockey - he did for the entire US not in the Northeast.
Changed the entire landscape.
Doomed Canadian Stanley Cups forever.
The US market for growth in the sport and talent was suddenly wide open. Instead of just Boston and Minnesota guys wanting to be in the NHL.

I think some people are confusing biggest trade for most successul trade. At leasy thats only reason I can think of why peoplr are talking abouy championships as reason for how big it is.
Ruth doesnt beat gretzky on trade. I seriously doubt there was a public outcry like it was from, a whole country when wayne was traded. It would be like LeBron being traded in todays 247 cycle

I would say yes, I recall at the time S.I. called Gretzky the GOAT calling him more dominant than Jordan. ?.

It's hockey. That alone disqualifies it from being the biggest sports trade ever.
Football, Basketball, and Baseball are the only sports that matter enough to have a trade to hold that title.
