i think technically it is "correct" as that is the sound "ea" make together.

So you have never been a tourist somewhere and mispronounced the name of something there?
Nola has it's quirks. We tend to have our own pronociations of common words. Like Burgundy being Bur - GUN - D
I was on Foucher today and my gps said "turn on foosher street. Not For-shay.

Nawlins and Loseeanna, both really irk me when I hear people say it. Especially people from Louisiana.

I know lol, but in 2006 BR and Htown were screaming about their evacuees.

I don't say it that way when referring to the city, but I do say it that way when I refer to my street, Orleans St. Does this make me a douche?
I believe you are correct in pronunciation, but you may still be a douche for living on Orleans St.

Nah, I'm saying picture a tourist saying "New OrLEENS" and a local telling them, "We usually say it as NewOrlins. You've never heard it exaggerated as N'awlins?" And the rest of the trip the tourist hams it up and says N'awlins.

I think we're on the same page? I'm pretty crappy at spelling words phonetically.

Same reason some locals say 'batin ridge'
I have never heard the whole thing said this way, the "batin" is spot on.

Not in French. The French city of Orleans (which is about a 90 minute drive from Paris) sounds like "ohr lay ohs" with that French nasal sound in the last syllable.

I always say New OR LEE-ANS
Posted on 2/5/14 at 2:36 pm to PelicanPoop
annoys me just as much as people who live in the city and pronounce it
view care. wtf is a view care.

We had a waitress correct my wife on the pronunciation while we were in San Francisco. According to her it's New Orleeens (accent on second syllable).
I guess she's heard Proud Mary one too many times.

I once had a tourist in the FQ ask me how to get to Shar-truh street. It took me a couple seconds to realize she was correctly pronouncing Chartres.

Only if you're Janis Joplin. Or covering "Me and Bobby Magee".
