Why do out-of-towners say "N'awlins"?

It grates my nerves. Local pronunciation of New Orleans is nothing remotely close than "N'awlins". Then while they are saying it they bob their head. Wtf is this about? Other than the late Frank Davis' "Naturally N'awlins" thing on local tv, nobody fricking says it.

They are just trying to be cool and fit in, but they fail everytime.

Why do certain folks say "French Quarters"?
Posted on 2/5/14 at 1:31 pm to PelicanPoop
because nothing has ever been produced for tourists that says N'Awlins
you are dumb as frick

It's written correctly, you just need to actually say the New part instead of just the N. Newawlins just looks strange. That's how I say it at least, although it looks strange typed. Newawlins.

It's a fun embellishment of New Orleans' accent and speech patterns. Tourists give us money and are a huge part of our economy. I don't think it's wise to have too much disdain for them.

"New OrLEENS" isn't acceptable right? I think they would otherwise say it like that and go too far trying to correct themselves.

Same reason some locals say 'batin ridge'

Once we get that airport we will have Fortune 500 companies moving their headquarters here like crazy and we can be less dependent on service industry tourist jobs.
I'm allowed to dream.

Why do some make groceries?
Posted on 2/5/14 at 1:43 pm to DanTiger
As long as people are coming to your town to spend money why do you care how they pronounce it? They're trying to fit in AND they're spending money!!! Bitch, bitch, bitch!

Different thing; one's a pronunciation, the other is a turn-of-phrase.
Also, the "Luziana" in your AV reminds me of all of my co-workers from Texas who actually pronounce it that way. Drives me nuts.
