How difficult is being an engineer major and a pledge?

My son is looking to go through rush during his sophomore year (next fall). He went through it this fall, but ultimately decided not to pledge anywhere since he didn't want that to be the reason if his grades were shitty in his first semester (which they weren't). He had a friend who was also an engineer that pledged and had to drop to construction management because it took up so much of his time. So it seemed like a good idea not joining looking back on it.
He seems really dead set on joining one. He didn't want to do Spring rush for some reason, maybe the frat he liked didn't participate or something..? Would this be a good idea grade wise? Was anyone here an engineer and made it through being a pledge that could give some useful advice?

What kind of engineering?
Most are pretty difficult and time-consuming. It can be done though.

Watch Greek. It's on Netflix.

I know a couple of frat guys that made it through engineering. The temptation to party and screw around exists for everyone not just frats. If it's what he wants to do then great. Just make sure that he understands his first priority should be his degree.

I was greek and graduated in ME. My pledge semester was pretty rough. You can definitely do better than I did. But I ended up with like a .04 GPA . Failed everything but a hour credit lab. Taught me how to buck up and study though.

im just fricking with you, it depends, does the kid have a good head on his shoulders? does he have a good track record of balancing multiple activites and academics? if so i say let him rush, he could always drop out if it becomes too much....but then everyone will think he is a pussy

He probably won't be an engineering major by then, anyways.

I did it and got a 2.6 my first semester. Never got anything less than a 3.6 every other semester and my cumulative GPA never got over a 3.5. It's tough but manageable.

I made some real solid friends my last two years in engineering. You spend a lot of time with those people. I'm friends or at least still acquaintances with a good bit of the folks I graduated with in engineering at LSU.

Tell him not too. He can hang out with his buds whenever, but the time invested in pledging is time not invested in engineering homework

First, he would have to find a fraternity that would give a bid to an engineering type. Definitely look lower-tier.

What's the point of pledging anyway?

I was a sophomore pledge and Chem-E major. My grades were shitty that semester but it was more due to my lack of focus than being a pledge.
Ended up finishing in Civil engineering. It's not impossible. He should do it.
